QuoteNoobMan Anybody *could* start wars. In practice of last century, there is only one actually doing it (constantly). You think that means nothing? Don't worry about the Germans: they don't have a big enough army and they have other things on their mind nowadays.by sdevijver - General
QuoteNoobMan If you start to think about how an eventual world war III would pop up ... there is only *one* country in the world which would start it. Are you delusional? Many countries have the capabilities of starting major military operations. It is estimated by NATO that if China would launch an all-out operation in Central Asia they will be able to cross the Ural mountains before there is aby sdevijver - General
Quotedroftarts I have never had trouble contacting them by phone or email (which have generally been answered promptly), [...] My experience has been different. They were apparently unavailable for one week without leaving any indication. I also couldn't reach them by phone (neither land line nor mobile.) They did handle my case swiftly once they were back.by sdevijver - General
I've had a similar problem. The motors I ordered weren't in stock. I've sent them an e-mail, added a comment to my order but didn't get any reply. I told my story on the IRC channel and a guy called redwizard got hold of them. It turned out they were on a trade show. They agreed to refund and I got that refund early the next week. I then ordered the motors from ruben-ikmaak (ruben ikmaak nl) whby sdevijver - General
QuoteTTYlater This seems to be a common problem. People are unclear about the facts. Even wtihin this thread, at least some have now conceded that old tools can make similar or newer better tools. This has been the reality of our existence and the reason behind our human technological progress. So your points here are completely false. Historically CNC mills/lathes can and do make parts for itselby sdevijver - General
QuoteTTYlater First of all, I have an el-cheapo home DIY 3D printer too. By no means am I putting reprap machines down. I am merely stating an academic fact and based on my observation that many people and the media, seem to have this unfounded belief the reprap or makerbot community is leading some kind of revolutionary paradigm shift in technology because "now machines can build parts for itselby sdevijver - General

To be sure you've calibrated your printer correctly have a look at this video: It was an eye-opener for me.by sdevijver - Reprappers
I wanted to solder the SMB myself as well after seeing the video. I was however advised on the IRC channel not to do it since it's apparently pretty tricky and I don't have the experience. So I've paid the extra dues at xyzprinter.com to have it soldered and I have to say now I'm happy with that choice. It has delayed the order with about a week though.by sdevijver - RAMPS Electronics

You should definitely consider the Prusa over the Mendel. Brass bushings are more than good enough, you won't wear those out. If you really want to go for the maximum overkill you can consider LM8UU linear bearings. Check this out for more information:by sdevijver - General Mendel Topics
I've spent the last 3 days writing an introductory guide to the Prusa Mendel tentatively titled "Building Your Own 3D printer": EDIT: the document has moved: The objective is: Quoteto give new community members one document that contains most of what they need to know before they start building. The document isn't entirely finished yet but it has come to a stage where I'm looking for your fby sdevijver - General
