It depends somewhat on the stepper motors you have. Some can run 5000 steps/second, others more. 5000 steps/s / 200 steps = 25 revolutions/s. Applied to a M10 thread, this is 25 s-1 x 1.5 mm = 37.5 mm/s = 626 mm/min. With a belt-driven drive you can go ten to twenty times faster, as one revolution moves the belt a full perimeter of the gear. Please note this assumes a sufficiently fast extruder aby Traumflug - Reprappers
Budget seems to be a daily topic :-) The probably cheapest RepStrap for people without significant workshop capabilities is the Wolfstrap. € 70,- (Germany) for all mechanical parts sans extruder: . On top of that you need motors, electronics and one extruder, all of which can be re-used for the "right" Mendel.by Traumflug - Reprappers
Ah, it's an AoI problem. Perhaps it's a good idea to switch to OpenSCAD . This software might be the future for RepRap, as it allows collaboration on the same model. Some people are already working on getting all the geometry ported: , second or third post.by Traumflug - General
QuoteI can't use AOI because that gives ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException If it's a matter of AoI vs. other STL generating software, you may want to test wether your model is "watertight". A small tool to find out and repair minor issues is Admesh . If you have success in repairing a STL, please document this to help software developers fixing the issue. The cheapest option for people not owning a CNC mill is probably the Wolfstrap (about € 70,- for mechanical parts and vitamins) , . QuoteThe temperature that nichrome reaches is determined according to wattage, correct? The temperature reached is determined by the wattage put into (by electricity) vs. the wattage going out (by thermal radiation and thermal convection). The more you insulate the wire, the hotter it will get.by Traumflug - General
Until plastic part prices drop, a WolfStrap is probably the best way to go. Just yesterdays I bought all the materials, the bill was € 61.09 (about $70,-), including glue, excluding the threaded rods and nuts. No further vitamins needed. You can re-use all the electronics, motors and of course the software for your Mendel, if you want.by Traumflug - General

QuoteThe thermistor is not hooked up yet. Can we assume you didn't wind the wire onto the barrel as well? I'm wondering why you're surprised the wire starts to glow in this case. The heating wire's power is sufficient for melting enough ABS at the desired feed rate. If there is no ABS to melt or not even a barrel, the wire heats up much higher. To avoid this overheating, the heater's power suppby Traumflug - Reprappers

Some interesting thoughts, damonb. I can't see however, what's wrong with an partially unmolten center. The barrel is some sort of heating chamber an if you can't melt the ABS quickly enough my first guess would be to make this heating chamber even longer. The filament has more time to become fluid, then. If you put some gate at the beginning of this chamber, there's no reason to have this chamby Traumflug - Plastic Extruder Working Group

To accuse people of not reading the license in question is even less helpful. Clearly, MakerBot hides pretty well where they derive from. While it's clearly laudable MakerBot helps distributing RepStraps, they could follow the GPL better. For example, their web site nowhere mentions their CupCake machine is a derivative of the RepRap project. I can only assume it is a derivative of RepRap, as I can see references to there in this forum. They claim it to be open source, but there's no link to view or download this source. Wait!
