Anyone curious about these new gadgets?
I ordered a quad core MK908 mini pc to experiment with.
Here's the link to the one I ordered. $86 and free shipping
It would be cool to be able to control a CNC or printer with one of these, but I don't know much about how that could be done.
It has USB, blue tooth, HDMI 1080P, quad core processor
They are being used for media currently but was wonder

Controllers
I have two belts for the Z axis and my Z axis is not very heavy
Plus two synced metal drive shafts for the two belts
It is very precise
I did not want to use ACME screws
I had ACME screws on a CNC router and did not like them
Too much backlash and chatter from the delrin bushings
I ended up replacing them with ball screws and ball bearing linear bearings and the CNC router worked so much better

I changed out the nozzle on my printer
The brass acorn nut was dragging material around and there was not enough brass on the end to be able to machine it down to a finer point
I purchased a makerbot style .4 mm nozzle and the prints are much cleaner now
I printed this skull in 4 parts and glued them together
I added some LED's behind the eye sockets just for fun
The lid comes off just above

The low voltage is not an issue as far as hurting yourself
12 volts would be way less of an issue than 24 volts and 24 volts is not that dangerous
But as was mentioned above, I doubt you would get good electrical contact through moving bushings and smooth rods
Those two items are not the best conductors
If you are worried about wires breaking, you are better off with some heavy gauge silicon j

General
I am using mach3 to control my printer and it is a bit different than what most here use
Your motor setting in Mach3 or what ever you are using need to be set up to be able to keep up with your slic3r settings
Speed and feed are just set as mm/sec in slicr3r on the print settings speed tab
The nozzle size and retraction are on the print settings/extruder tab

Layers look really nice and even
The two Z axis drive shafts are in sync
So when the bottom drive shaft pulls up, the top one duplicates that and keeps everything very even side to side on the Z axis
I keep cranking up the motor speeds on the X and Y axis to see how far I can push it
So far so good
The X and Y axis are printing at 1800 to 3000mm in Mach3

I am using GT2 belts and pulleys on my Z axis that has 10 inches of vertical travel
No problems so far
I have the Probotix drivers set up for 16X and the motors are 200 steps - 1.8 degree
One single Nema17 is driving two drive shafts that have two belts and four GT2 20 tooth pulleys
The weight that this motor has to lift is not huge
My X axis and A axis are fairly light

Stepper Motors, Servo Motors, DC Motors
If I noticed that the outer wheel was starting to walk it's way away from the inner bearing I would probably press it back into place and use a thin bead of RTV silicon or epoxy around the outer diameter of the bearing rather than trying to force adhesive into the center between the bearing and the wheel.
Most of the adhesive would just get wiped off when you pressed the bearing back into the wh

They looked stamped but I am sure they do the job fine
Good forged T-Slot nuts are really expensive and used more for clamping down things on a CNC machine
For 3D printer use, these nuts would be fine

Yo Kram,
Here's my idea for a Linear ball bearing for your V-Slot
The balls will ride in a Delrin groove that stops short at the ends so the balls can't come out
the Delrin material sits in a groove in the aluminum angle pieces and top flat bearing piece
The angle aluminum is 1.5 inch and it would have to be shaped a CNC machine
The two angles are bolted to the top bearing flat piece

I was wondering how long it would be until the Chinese got into the game as a frame source.
Maybe they already had but I was not aware of it?
It's only a matter of time until builders will be flooded with other Chinese offerings and the prices should come down.
It has happened in many other markets and 3D printing will be getting their attention

ttsalo has is correct,
You need to keep the mass of the moving parts as light as possible
I have a solid metal frame CNC gantry router and that design is fine for that purpose
I tested an extruder on my CNC before building a dedicated printer
The test print I did took 1.45 minutes on the CNC router
I just built a 3D printer with separate X and Y axis and very light moving parts

Just throwing out ideas on how to make a super low profile bearing for your V slots
My CNC machine uses linear rails and linear bearings and this is where I got this idea
Instead of wheels, use ball bearings for an ultra low profile.
The images I attached are of the super precise and heavy duty linear bearings on my CNC machine
The V slot bearing does not have to be this massive

Yay, first run on my new printer just finished
Got to dial in some settings in slic3r, but no major problems on the first run.
From what I have read, the spider web strings and small blobs may just be a matter of more retraction on extruder moves
Any suggestions are welcome for figuring out how to dial that in

I want to move the extruder up and away a certain distance above the finished print.
Adding a fixed value custom End G-code command like G0 Z100 will not work if the printed object is 150mm tall
I see in slic3r 098 that you can use placeholder variables but I can't find any info about this
Example:
I need to add 100mm to where ever the extruder is currently at when the print finishes

I am currently putting together a T slot printer with linear bearings.
The linear bearings are a bit of a pain to set up because they have to be shimmed to eliminate play
Your V slot system looks way easier to set up than linear bearings
You can see how sleek my T slot build is in the post I linked above, but I am not married to T slot linear bearings

Pretty cool
Keeping the size of the rolling bearing assembly as small as possible is a must in my opinion for small 3D printer builds
It's no big deal on a big CNC router
The rollers on a V slot look to be much more bulky than a single T slot linear bearing
But as you mentioned in one of your videos, the price of T slot linear bearings is much higher.

I spent a couple days getting everything square, bolting down the electronics and got the A axis extruder almost done.
Here's a video of the 3D printer running the same cup code I did on my CNC machine extruder test.
The 3D printer is finishing the same code in 25 minutes that my CNC machine did in 1 hour 40 minutes

For this type of application you need a breakout board, 4 motor drivers and a power supply
