Forgive me if I missed it but anyone put together the extruder into a working RepRap yet? Interested to see how well these parts perform. As I understand it, the extruder is one of the trickest parts to get working right so it's good to have someone producing them who knows what he's? doing. Well done in any case reifsnyderb, unfortunately I don't live in the US... Cheersby Nil Einne - For Sale
Your thinking of hybrid vigour . However it's not really applicable here since it's most evident when the parents are highly inbred, usually in artifical selection cases where people have been inbreeding the plants/animals for years. I doubt any of the RepRap stuff qualifies and in any case, to work you'd need to actually have some sort of genetic algorythm at work in the background which we donby Nil Einne - General

I think I read this post from 22th December 2008 before but somehow missed a key point "In addition, it has the components that will allow us to move to the Generation 3 Electronics, which will be needed for RepRap Version II *"Mendel" somtime next year*." So we have it from the horse's mouth Mendel is supposed to be sometime next year (i.e. now this year). Okay this probably means the initialby Nil Einne - General

Just came across this in a discussion about the Real-View in another forum. A sorta DIY 3D laser scanner. You do need your own camera and laser but the software is free for personal use albeit only outputting low res models. Unfortunately Windows only (and obviously not open source). Looking at the scans they do seem rather decent although it sounds like this is with fancish hardware, experby Nil Einne - 3D Scanners, Book Scanners, and Optics
First comments I've seen from someone who's actually seen the machine I also came across this though "Everybody in these straitened times need a desktop 3D scanner. I believe a dual core EeePC is supposed to be launching some time in the future. Also the OLPC is designed to be as open source as possible so you can guess that the EeePC which is primarily AFAIK a closed Asus developement is not part of it. Besides that the OLPC team have had problems with Intel recently, they feel that they're (Intel) trying to undermine the program by convincing people/countby Nil Einne - Controllers

BTW. whatever the case, before you get too excited bear in mind the part isn't actually easy to get hold of yet. According to the second Arguino forum link, the chip has production delays and DIP part may be delayed further. And these site say sampling in 2009Q1 (AVRfreaks suggest it's been delayed a lot so don't count on this date). If you try to order from Digikey , you'd find if you order 2by Nil Einne - Controllers
I was looking into the Sanguino and was intrigued to notice the ATmega1284P which has more RAM, more flash memory and more EEPROM then the ATmega644P but seems otherwise the same. I found some discussion at the Arduino board but I couldn't find any here so I thought I'd mention it. From what I can tell (not being an EE or having experiece with microcontrollers), it's basically a drop in replaby Nil Einne - Controllers

I think the vast majority of universities have online subscriptions to common journals usually via institutional access or something similar. Depending on how these are set up, they may work automatically from university computers (they'd detect your IP) or may require you to log in. I think most detect your IP nowadays.by Nil Einne - Tissue Engineering

It looks to me like you put the object on a turntable which rotates and imaged via those two things pointing at it. I'm not sure what they are but probably one is a CMOS or CCD and perhaps the other one a light source?by Nil Einne - 3D Scanners, Book Scanners, and Optics
Sorry to resurrect this thread but I couldn't resist. The other thing is the Chinese are the ones actually producing 99% of this stuff so it makes more sense for them to spam directly then for some third party buying it from China companies to spamby Nil Einne - General
Thanks for the responses, been interesting to read. BTW it's not so much that I'm scared of building a Darwin because it will be obsoleted by Mendel so much as although I find the idea rather interesting, the Darwin is more then I can currently afford (being unemployed plus living in NZ means it's probably likely to be more expensive to build*) so I was wondering whether Mendel is likely to be oby Nil Einne - General
I know developers, particularly open sources ones with jobs hates this question but I'm just wondering, how far away is Mendel? I'm obviously not expecting a super accurate release date like 9/5/2011 at 03:51:27 UTC just a rough idea like is it likely to be 2010? 2011? 2012? Or maybe even late this year? I'm well aware of course any estimate is highly tentative and will depend on how things go aby Nil Einne - General
