I did not think that the Mendel had a DC Motor Extruder. The latest firmware assumes a Stepper Motor unless you change the firmware code to be a DC motor. The techzone and makerbot electronics are the same, just a different form factor. (There may be discussions about build quality etc, but they are the same design). I would personally recommend following the instructions about configuring theby davmj - General
When I was having that problem, I changed the programmer in the ardunio configuration to ardunio as the programmer rather than stk500, but then I was using a techzone board rather than one I have made myself Davidby davmj - Firmware - mainstream and related support
You should get a zero temp from the motherboard by itself with no extruder board attached. This is a good test of the motherboard and you get a response then you know that the motherboard is working correctly and that you can then move on to the extruder. You then connect the extruder (using the RS485 connection and direction cables), but don't power it on. You should still get the zero temp reaby davmj - Controllers
Did you get a temp reading from the motherboard when doing the tests and it has only stopped working when connecting the wires to the extruder board? Or have you never got a temp reading from the motherboard? Davidby davmj - Controllers
The FiveD firmware uses the trimpot to set the value of the current through the PWM chips on the extruder board. (it can be done through G-Code as well but the RepRapHost software assumes the trimpot by default. Please note that if you put too much current through the stepper motor it does not respond correctly either. The whine from the motor will always happen (It has been discussed in a diffby davmj - General Mendel Topics
The host can send a G code to set the PWM, or it can also send a G-Code which tells the firmware to use the setting on the pot on the extruder board to set the current for the PWM (This assumes RepRapHost and the 5D firmware). M113: Set Extruder PWM Example: M113 Set the PWM for the currently-selected extruder. On its own this command sets RepRap to use the on-board potentiometer on the extruby davmj - Reprappers
Yeap, basic rule is don't touch the stepper motor cables when the power supply is on as there is always a current flowing through the stepper motors, even when not turning. As to why the stepper from makerbot is not working, I haven't a clue, it might be that you have to adjust the current on the stepper driver. It may be that the stepper motor wires have to go in a different order on the makerboby davmj - Controllers

You don't happen to have the make and model of the stepper motors do you so you can get the data sheet. The colour of the cables does not really provide much indication of the order that they should be connected. Get a multimeter and and take a wire, measure the resistance between that cable and another one. The matching wire for a coil will be low compared to a non matching one. Are you specifically building a cupcake cnc printer or a Mendel, you might be better off using the firmware for the reprap project (Have you got a stepper motor or a DC Motor attached to the extruder board) from a testing point of view Back to the stepper motors drivers the pots are the small metal circles on a square base near where the motherboard board connects to the stepper driver. I agree with the comment about the wire->connector connections. As my cable has gone from working to iffu to failed with the press through connectors. (And you appear to only be able to remake the cable a few times before the connectors just fail.) I have orders some better connectors (I hope), and am waiting for them to arrive Davidby davmj - Reprappers
I think the response came across badly, it was more any one can produce and sell electronics specifically for the Mendel based on the electronics design found on the reprap pages. They don't need to use the electronics specifically from Makerbot. As it stands I don't believe that the core RepRap project sells anything itself these days.by davmj - Firmware - mainstream and related support
Have you adjusted the pots on the stepper driver boards at all? On the one that is not working correct try small adjustments to see if it makes any difference. Also when you uploaded the firmware did you update both the motherboard and the and the extruder? What is the response to the M105 G-CODE? (Get temp). Davidby davmj - Controllers
Indeed as I am using this firmware from the SVN, reprap/mendel/firmware/FiveD_GCode. It would be good to actually know if I am using the correct firmware or not for my Gen3 electronics. (Being Sanguino) Davidby davmj - Firmware - mainstream and related support
I tried to replicate this bug so far have not managed to do it. (Doing by sending the G-Codes manual). However as the printer is not fully working yet and I was just using the electronics I have set up at the moment there may be some testing issues (Using the very latest release of the firmware from the SVN) Davidby davmj - Firmware - mainstream and related support
There is only 1 LED on the Extruder board when powered through the USB port. Also note that USB connector needs to be connected the other way around from the motherboard when programming the firmware. I don't see why that should make a difference to the printing using the RepRap Host software, as it is the same G-Code generated by print to file as used in the print to printer. Davidby davmj - Reprappers
With the 5D software it turns out the the Pot is optional, you can either control it from through G-Codes (M113) or through the on board Pot. If you just send M113 as the G-CODE it takes the value from the Pot. If you send M113 S0 it turns off the current. the value for S can range from 0 to 1 (Off to Full) and is a float value. My problem with respect to getting the pot to turn was a combinatiby davmj - Controllers
Have you uploaded the correct firmware to the board using the arduino software? The reprap software is only there to control the board once programmed, and would not need the sanguino stuff you have been putting into directories Cheers Davidby davmj - General
I am looking at trying to get the extruder controller to get its motor to run. First thing to understand though is that it is not a stepper driver, but a firmware solution to make the stepper motor turn. The Pot on the bot sets a value which the firmware then used to set the PWM drivers to the correct value to get the motor to turn. I have managed to confirm that the board can drive the motor usby davmj - Controllers

I believe that the java3d libraries come from here: . Java3d development within SUN (as was) was put on hold and integrated into the JavaFX development so the community has taken over development and enhancements with respect to this.
