Sounds like it'll print fine. Almost certainly more accurate than I could get it here at home. And since the filament swells coming out of the nozzle ANYWAY, it doesn't affect final filament dimensions, not does any amount of inaccuracy remove the need for calibration of the individual machine. IMHO, it doesn't matter. OTOH, .5mm -> .58mm = 116% of the intended size. That's certainly not notby jgilmore - For Sale

I'm looking at teaching a class this fall in basic electrical theory. This class is aimed at 12-16yr-old kids, and I intend to cover Ohm's law, Thevenin equivalent circuits, etc. No Capacitance/inductance. Basicly I'm planning on covering theory & safety, Hitting Ohm's law hard, and how to use a multimeter. Give them some resistors, LED's and light bulbs to play with, and have fun with it. 8by jgilmore - Controllers

The cannonical way to convert to G-Code is skeinforge. It's used as much or more than the host software, and even comes with a send.py and RepRapArduinoSerialSender.py, which will send the G-code to the reprap for you, thus completely avoiding the need for the host software. More info is available on Enrique's Skienforge Blog The information on the reprap wiki is woefully out of date. Or non-exiby jgilmore - General
Standard gravity is taken as ~9.8 N/kg, so 2kg would be ~19 Newtons. or .02 kN? Hmm. I was just sure that was where the error was. There is an error somewhere - gravity is the least of the forces the frame is subject to. The stepper motors slamming the head from one side to the other is MUCH stronger, and doesn't deflect significantly.by jgilmore - General
Use the directions here To determine which of your wires is "common". For 5-wire unipolor-only setups, the common wire is usually tied high, and then you use a MOSFET or similar to tie two of the others wires (AT A TIME) to ground... You will not be able to use these with the standard reprap stepper drivers, as those boards will drive unipolar motors ONLY. You CAN use it, but you'll have to coby jgilmore - Mechanics

I tied the gasoline tubing that I used as the motor coupling on using a bit of bailing wire (tie wire). Kinda the same sort of thing as a pipe clamp, but cheaper. That worked great, but does have the disadvantage that it won't come apart even if the Z stage hits the end (hard) and so it may lead to damaging the MDF that I built it out of. Someday I'll post pictures...by jgilmore - Mechanics
Hey, I just go laid off. I jokingly suggested to my wife this morning that I could pick up those printers that I posted awhile back, salvage them myself, and take the steppers to the maker fair to sell and pay my way. It looks a lot more doable than I though it would. So what about accommodations? Anybody in the area that I could crash with? How are park benches this time of year?by jgilmore - General

I have no particular objection to that practice, reifsnyderb. I've always kinda assumed that you where doing it whenever you get a sale or something though. It might be interesting to post each sale made, either a simple "sold another one" or include the state or country you're shipping too. That would give more appearance of activity that a simple "btt". Even inquiries could be documented thisby jgilmore - For Sale
Windows "installer" programs are a pain in the butt. IMHO, of course. It's probably compressed, perhaps in a "cab" file? You may need to run the installer program to get to it. Happily, you're running windows and can do so by clicking on it. Good luck. "cab" files may be a bit picky to deal with from within the GUI - it will may want to do something else with them. You'll need to unzip it, getting the .jar file out, and overwrite the old .jar file which (in theory) exists somewhere on your hard disk. Where that jar file exists depends mostly on your operating system, I think. Windows? Mac? Linux? Which flavor of it? If you know how to ask your OS to search for the first .jar file, (the one you're using now that's out of date) that's probably the simplestby jgilmore - Controllers

There was an "official" way to do that when the darwin design needed a continuous belt for it's Z axis. As I recall, it involved superglue, shaving parts of the belt, and a jig to insure the tooth spacing stayed the same. I don't know what the reliability was, it seems to me that the superglue would be too brittle for that sort of use, and something like flexible yet strong like "shoe goo" wouldby jgilmore - Mechanics
Ogre, have you ever tried to actually use that makefile? I have, and it not only does it not work right out of the box, it takes a LOT of fiddling to get it to work. There are two main problems with it: The Arduino IDE uses an "invisible" "main.cpp" file. One is included, so that can be copied in. Really stupid that it's not done automatically by the makefile though, as it's only 5 or so lines.by jgilmore - Controllers
What is actually controlled is the number of steps that the extruder stepper takes, which is a distance. It doesn't precisely correspond to the length of filament extruded, but it's still a distance. The firmware is feeding all of these into a modified bresenham line drawing algorithm, which operates in discrete steps. Which axis these steps are taken on make no functional difference. It's all dby jgilmore - General

The fomula is: The threads per inch/mm gives you the number of turns to move one inch/mm. The stepper motor has a degrees/step rating, which can also be stated as steps per revolution. This number is 200 for most steppers, or 400 if actually found some of the recommended 1.8 degree stepper motors. Simply multiply these two and you have your steps per inch/mm. The need for a rigid bed keeps coming up, which doesn't work well with the ideal of a conveyor belt that we can print on forever. So a segmented belt (clamped on the edges when printing) comes up. Similar to your (nopheads) thin steel sheet held down by magnets, but cut into sections so it'll roll around the ends. But that will leave lines on the underside of the part when printing is done. How do you plan on holding the flexible sheet down hard enough to resist the force of warping? Nophead found that a vacuum wasn't enough - the "pull up" force is stronger than atmospheric pressure. So unless your reprap is in a pressure vessel that won't work. Or at least won't entirely eliminate warping like a rigid bed would. Stretching it tight won't work either - the pull force on the sideby jgilmore - General Mendel Topics
