I've been fiddling with that idea for three years. Never came up with a replacement for the expensive timing gear/belt drive that was fast enough to be acceptable.
I think the cable drive is going to be the one. Have spent the last week going through several versions of a machine that can be built with a jig saw and a drill.
Here's a look at the latest. Several iterations and I'm back to almo

Yes. A mini would sell. Probably cheaper, faster to make and after the buyer prints a mendel and passes it around, like mccoyn's going to, each one would produce more and quicker than a mendel(if it was making more mini's).
I'd buy one if you can produce it cheaper than the mendel.

@Bob Morrison ... Ah yes...I stand corrected.
@freds...The dowel that's being replaced by a bolt is in the drive mechanism but it wraps a cable around it to pull the stage. It's turned by the stepper to wind the cable not to move the stage directly.
the movie is on youtube at
here I'll stick it in.

Pitch?
I once heard a quote. Something like: "The only thing separating the English and the Americans is a common language."

Reduce the angle as from 1.8 degree/step to .9? I could also use half step or even 1/16 step but since the wood dowel was a little wobbly I'll try a smaller shaft first. I did change the timing delay per step and could get it to go slow

The wood dowel has been canned. It's TOO FAST.
The opposite of the problem with the threaded rod.
Now I'm looking at a 5/16"/ 8mm smooth rod. That will slow it almost in half and actually fit the skate bearing.
Also eliminate the slight eccentricity I was getting with the dowel.

I tried drawer slides and wasn't happy with the stability. Was originally trying to make a cnc that could also be a reprap.
I'm trying to make something that is cheap and easy that just works.
This cable drive might be the ticket. It's cheap and easy (if you have three hands). The makeup wire won't be strong enough to take the constant flexing but fishing line might be. Won't need to be very

The cable I bought was way to stiff to bend around the 1/2" dowel I'm using. So I used some 20awg makeup wire. Seems to work. I think I'll try some fishing line next. Probably not for a week or so. That's a nema 14 stepper.
A movie for your viewing pleasure.

Darkith, I was hoping for more. Can you draw a sketch? Even just a napkin drawing scanned in would be great.
nophead: Looked at your earlier work. March 2007. Your xyz mechanics cost $550 plus wood, electronics. Came out as an excellent cnc/repstrap but at price. I'm looking for something a bit less expensive.

That's the first time I ever saw hydraraptor. I thought yours was a cnc mill that you had converted. Guess we should all take a closer look at your earlier work.
Here's the first attempt at a cable drive. Maybe more tomorrow. Gotta go to work soon.

@ bjbsquared: I've been worrying with the z axis for the cable-auger....
This is probably too big. The Lowe's here in town didn't have any 1/2" mdf so I think I'll be using the 5.2mm plywood I have. Cut it up in 2's and glue them together to make ~1/2" thickness.
I've attached the sketchup7 file.
The z only has 4" of travel. 7" on x and y.
The cable drive will take a few more days to actu

@ bjbsquared: I did finally get to Lowe's and bought the smallest cable they had (1/16") and some 1" sliding screen door pulleys to try out making the cable auger....
Wrapping the cable around the 5/16"~8mm shaft I wanted to use(gives ~0.002"/step) made a permanent kink in the cable when I released it. I wrapped it around a 1/2"~12mm marker (gives mendel's 0.1mm/step) and it seemed to do much b

@Sebastien- I have attempted to edit the wiki with no success.
Now I am concerned because I visited the WolfStrap page, clicked English and got the following permission error.

To not be able to edit without permission I can see, but not be able to visit a translate

I just posted on the new forum. I think posting here is good too. This way the rest of the world knows that Oklahoma is on the reprap map! And active.

@ bjbsquared: I shamelessly stole your sketchup model of the Auger and played with making a cable drive to replace the McWire threaded rod. Iused the nema23 stepper you used but I think a 17 or even a 14 would be strong enough. Where did you find the sketchup file for the motor?
You'll still have to use your imagination to see the cable stretched from the drive rod to the pulley and it's attache

I like the cable drive idea.
If we only used four all under the print platform attached to the center and still support the platform like we do on the McWire, and not on the cable itself, we can just substitute the cable for the threaded rod.
Using the drawing from murd's link and stretching BeagleFury's drawing in the other dimension we have what something that might work.
I'm on my way to

@Stoffel15...Your printed gears and mendel parts look good.
How did you make your first geared extruder? I'm assuming that was needed to keep up with the slow speed of the threaded rod.

bjbsquared That's just Cruel! Not even a hint like the page from the McMaster catalog of a significant part? Come on!
I started a build of a McWire and when the lower stage became warped from having the screws holes on the pipe be off the top surface I just stuck it all up on top of the cabinet and went back to the original one I had star

Interesting video.
I'm sure you will find problems when you get to actually building it. Keep everyone up to date.
What did you draw it with? I wish everybody would make their drawings available. Especially if it's in Google Sketchup. I can zoom in on the details that way. Not to well versed in AOI.
I definitely am in need of an extruder. My repstrap is one of those that is more like a glacie

Hi
Many people have asked me can the mill be converted. I haven't tried. I don't use CNC in my shop, but some have bought the acra mill just for that purpose, but never got back to me to tell me if it worked or not. They also never asked for their money back, so I must assume it worked. The thread I use is a 1/2"-20, so each full rotation is .050" of an

I think your tender idea is on target. Too bad Paypal will rake in it's percentage.
This:

was posted in For Sale today in Pinco's thread. Unfortunately no one is selling. Just talking. Someone wants Mendel parts really bad to pay $500 for them. I would pay for Mendel parts too. Just
