Hi Forrest, what's with the free MLCad ( ) from Michael Lachmann? He developed it for building LEGO-models, but you can make your own parts and macros and it's exporting into other 3D-formats and the BOM too. As Lego-models are built (brick- and) sheetwise, this could be an interesting variant for designing and fabbing ... Viktorby VDX - RepRap Host
... i've built laser-plotters in past, a laser-welding system recently and have a pigtailed 1-W-diodelaser waiting for work, so there is some experience already there - see and My first runs were with a 3-Watt and two 5-Watt-CO2-lasers where i used to cut plastic-sheets, paper and leather until 3mm thickness - it did work, but the fuming is highly acidic, poisonous and heavy carcinogene!!! For a sample of driving a laser-plotter with steel-wires look at the atached images in this post - In this laser-plotter i used a stationary RF-CO2-Laser and moving mirrors/focus-head for cutting thin plastic-sheets and could sense some resonancies with steppermotor-driving in fullstep-mode, but haby VDX - Mechanics
