Printing
I now print at 200 deg with this filament and it bonds very well now. I can't believe the difference it made! I need to play around with the settings as I'm still a little over the single wall thickness. I reduced it a bit based on the comments above and it was definately under-extruding. I'm sure there's a sweet spot there somewhere though. I'll probably find it as the last metre runs through th

Generally I use a heated bed with clean glass, bed set to 70 deg as the glass is around 10-15 deg lower than the bed. Before each print I clean the glass surface with household glass cleaner and the prints stick really well. When the glass cools a bit after the print, it does just pop off. I've tried a few different filaments and all have worked with these settings so far.

Print is looking good! I've seen you've had a few issues getting to this point so well done for sticking it out. Well worth it

Look what I made!
Just to confirm for future readers, it had a '4' stamped on it so 0.4mm it is!

Simba, yes that was the idea of the thread really. As I'm still new to this it's easy to lose sight of the big picture by printing gimmicky items just for the hell of it. I am 100% with you on the future of the technology so I'm fascinated to see what people have done so far.
I've yet to print anything which I need 'off the cuff' (like shelf brackets!) but I've planned a few things and they've

Thanks Chris. Sorry for the (probably stupid) question, but how do I get an stl from that code?
Thanks

Hi, has anyone got the .stl file for the standard small fan bracket? I can't find it on the thingiverse Mendel90 page and I have no idea how to use SCAD to render it myself!
Mine is half broken on one side so I thought I should make a spare in case it fails...
Thanks for any help

Generally speaking, it seems Rapidbots are a steeper learning curve than most! It will be interesting to see how the prints come out when the current bumps are ironed out by their owners

Yes, to be honest that's why I got mine, albeit for hobby projects... Pics as promised anyway:-
Not too dissimilar from printer parts I guess, but for an unrelated project in any case! Very interested in other peoples print trials...

I'm really curious to see what people have made which have a genuine use (Excluding printer parts / upgrades). I love all the things that people make for fun, print quality etc but I'm fascinated to see functional parts that you would either struggle to make in another method, or would be cost prohibitive. Pictures would be good as always!
I'm part way through a print now which I will post assum

I had my hotend turn off 20 mins into a print (Mendel90) and again at exactly the same time when I tried again. I re-sliced the model (same settings) and it worked fine after that. I assume it was some kind of rouge G-code or a bad combination of moves or something! Hasn't done it since anyway...

I'll check the single wall thickness. My parts come out slightly larger than they should at the moment and I'd assumed so far that it was extruding a little too wide (it's about 0.2mm wider than the 10mm test cube should be). How would I draw up a single wall test object?
Temp change will be a good test too then by the sound of it. The part was made at 0.2mm and it broke perfectly along the laye

I've recently swapped to a different colour PLA from a different manufacturer and it seems to have a weaker bnod between layers. I assume different PLA will have different properties anyway but could I imporove it by increasing temperature or something like that?
Also, can anyone recommend a strong PLA?
I haven't tried ABS yet but I'm a little put off by the promise of a bad smell (printer is i

There may be a better way, but I paused the print then dropped the extruder temp to 70 deg, disabled the motors and pulled out the old filament. Then pushed the new one in until it stopped as usual and heated the extruder up again. I raised the z axis by 10mm and extruded a bit until i could see the nozzle oozing, lowered 10mm again and resumed print. It carried on fine!
I didn't really plan th

That's it really, first time ever and even did it during the print :-)

Maybe Solidoodle forum? They're going for the cheaper market with as much hype as Makerbot...

So far, having had my Mendel90 built for 5 days, I've been mostly trying random prints to dial in the settings. Along the way I've made a fan guard, two herringbone gears which I designed, the small planetary gear set from thingiverse (which isn't quite fine enough quality to be able to assemble... yet), Several 10mm test cubes of varying success, a bearing / leadscrew bracket I designed for anot

Ah, I'll adjust my slicing settings then! They'be been on 0.5mm so far... I'll see if I can see the block when I take the fan off.
I managed to overwrite the sliced file sent with the kit as Pronterface doesn't bother asking if you want to overwrite things!

Very quick question, hopefully straightforward! I've got a Mendel 90, now about 5 days old. What nozzle size would it have come with? I'm guessing 0.5 but would like to check.
Thanks

It all sounds positive to me! The build manual looked a little sparse to me but the support seems to be making up for it. I'll look forward to seeing your updates
