Right now the tooltips disappear after some seconds. Some tooltips contain longer text and I'd like more time to finish reading them (without moving the cursor off the field and then back again). Is it possible to set the display time for the tooltip?

I am wondering what is the air flow of the 30mm fan that comes with the E3D? I've tried to find the rate but can't see it on the E3D web site. It seems other 30mm fans average around 4CFM. Would this be close?

So if the USB is connected to the MEGA does that mean the USB is powering it? I'm guessing yes.
I think the mega will choose which supply to use. If there is a supply from jack or ramps it will use that, otherwise it will choose to fed from the usb supply. So yes it will use usb power if only that is available.
Thank you. I wonder if it matters if the USB was dir

QuotenopheadCheck the ground connection to the melzi is tight.
Thank you. I will do this as soon as I can get some help.
QuotenopheadThe problem is completely solved if you use octoprint on a raspberry pi that is powered from the the same PSU and grounded to the Melzi.
I started to read about RaspberryPi; that is really cool. I think it will be worth evaluating for my new machine. Now I need t

QuoteAlzibiffNot necessarily. It might be worth eliminating the USB connection entirely by printing directly from the SD card for a while.
Good idea; if this starts happening more frequently I will. But honestly I can't accurately remember the last time it locked up like this. It's really been more like months (it's happened maybe five times since I've had the Mendel90). I'd have to print from t

QuotecdruYou can put M80 and M81 and the beginning and end of your print job to control the power supply.
That is very cool. I'll try this when the build is complete. Or I guess I can test it when I test the electronics before setting them onto the machine.

After printing happily for weeks - over USB - today the printer stopped 3/4 way through a print much like the jobs it had no problem doing previously. There were no error messages in the Pronterface output window. The fan remained on but I could send no commands through Pronterface. So I turned off the Mendel90 and after turning it on again connected to it as normal. When closing Pronterface it g

Good idea with the pigtail. So - if I understand correctly - the issue with a solder filed section of multiple strand wire is its shape which could result in it becoming loose. And this looseness would cause poor connection. If the wire cross section happened to be an oval then if it were inserted with the flattest side on top and bottom it would be unable to ever twist due to the pressure exerte

Thanks Neil,
It is reassuring to hear from someone with industry background. I also never turn off my desktop machine. I made this decision years ago after researching the issue. While there is likely a case to be made for either side I chose to believe the argument that repeated power on/power off cycles and thus heating and cooling of components led to shorter life than leaving the computer ru

Do these screw terminals like single solid wires? Seems like there are no other choices ... one solid or multiple strands. But if we take two or three wires, twist the strands, and flow solder into them we make a single strand, do we not? Seems like this is the best we can do?

QuotecdruWhat electronics are you using? RAMPS for instance can turn on and off the power supply, running the micro controller just off of standby power until full power is required.
I am using a Melzi right now but plan to use RAMPS on the machine I am designing. How does RAMPS turn on/off the PSU? Is it automatic? Or do we use some software to control it?

@nophead .. Thank you. I'm wondering too about the Melzi? Is it fine being powered continuously, or does it go into a sleep/rest state when not running so the chips etc. stay cooler?
@neildarlow .. We got a new little black fuzzy kitty and after he's grown for some months I can't believe the amount of tiny little hairs that stick to the oily smooth rods. They must be floating it the air and lan

You're welcome .. I hope it works for you. One note; I push as much tubing as possible onto the stepper motor shaft. That will increase the friction to the shaft and make slipping less likely.

I rarely turn the machine off (my disability makes it difficult for me to reach the switch myself so I have to ask someone to do it) but I'm wondering if I really should begin turning it off when not using it. Maybe I can use a power bar and place it where I can reach the switch.
Will leaving it on all the time significantly shorten the life of the PSU and other electronics? What do the rest of

Quotedc42There is a thread in the Ormerod forum on modifying an ATX PSU to improve regulation on the 12V rail.
Is this the thread? I read through it. Most was above my head without making a lot of effort to do the calculations but the thread made me curious and I decided to test the heat up times on my Mendel90 which always has seemed to get the bed hot very quickly.
These are the results:

QuotecdruThe problem is sometimes screw terminals don't like to have multiple wires in there, especially close to what it physically can fit in the space.
On my Mendel90 I used three wires into the positive and three into the negative. I twisted and soldered them; then cut off the tip so the end was blunt and I haven't had a problem yet. But are you referring to the screw terminal not liking mul

Thanks! Mostly I am concerned that the machine is quiet when it's not working because I don't turn it off between prints. You are right; as soon as it is working any PSU fan would likely not be heard.

Thank you, I will test the voltage.
Yes, there were plenty of wires. I tested how many wires can fit in the RAMPS connectors and found I can get four in per connector. So I have sixteen total for the yellow and black power (four bundles of four wires) and I figure the more the merrier.
I thought to leave three black and three yellow long to use for fans, etc. that I could control individually w

Thank you both. I had the case back together before reading about de-soldering. All went well just tucking them but de-soldering would surely be cleaner. The reason I used this ATX PSU was I had it sitting around; plus the first Mendel90 I made works well with the same mod (and fits onto the machine's frame nicely) so I thought I would stick with something I knew.
One thing I like about this ATX

Since I haven't closed the case while doing the the ATX power supply mod I have another question. Two yellow wires are a different tint than all the other yellow wire. They are slightly darker. They are by no means orange but they are noticeably not the bright yellow of the +12V wires. Why would this be? Did the manufacturer do this intentionally? Or did this bit of wire just happen to be off col

I hadn't given this issue much thought before as I am still relatively new to RepRap. But now I am curious about the G3D RAMPS kit I bought from an eBay Hong Kong seller. The MEGA has "Arduino MEGA 2560" with the TM symbol on it. Does this mean it is a 'genuine' product? And does genuine mean it must have been made by the original company? Or could anyone stamp "Arduino MEGA 2560" on the board?

I am modifying a Corsair CX500 PSU to power my Mendel90 variant. I have clipped the un-needed wires short inside the PSU case (twisted, soldered and insulated the same colored wires together) and now want to tuck and place them neatly so they don't touch the PSU fan and then close the case.
What I want to know is how hot do the aluminum heat sinks inside the PSU get when the PSU is running? Can
