I think all the RRP ones are vertical, I did have a look on their site. I'm a big fan of their Mendel btw, especially the tri-colour. I actually like the idea of using adjustable rods to align the frame. It gives me wiggle room that I don't have if I have to cut things at right angles (or at the right angles).by UkIan - Mendel90
Did google this and you just get a lot of chatter about backlash. What actually is the difference between the two? Thanksby UkIan - Mechanics
Good to know, thanks. The 90 seems like the best of the cartesian designs, although I also like the reprap pro mendel design. I think the 90 wins slightly just by having a horizontal X carriage.by UkIan - Mendel90
Had a few prints fail using repetier since updating. It will be printing fine and then stop. Happened after an hour on one, two hours on another. Switched to pronterface and completed a print. Not conclusive I know. Just thought I'd ask if anyone else has experienced problems.by UkIan - Repetier
Quotecdru Quotesheepdog43I believe I used 14ga for the bed, 16ga was not quite enough. Why was 16ga "not quite enough"? The advantage of heavier gauge wire is to lower resistance, preventing voltage drop and the wire acting as a heating element. However if you're only using a few feet of wire, the amount of resistance is pretty minimal. 4 feet of 18ga wire running at 10 amps has a voltage dropby UkIan - Controllers
With the multiple filaments in one extruder set up, wouldn't you have issues with the filament either sticking (PLA) or stringing out and clogging (PLA if warmer, ABS)?? I've been looking at what is required to switch to multiple extruders. I've been shopping for bits and checking out Thingiverse, here and software. Software is still the number one issue. The parts are the easy part. There's thby UkIan - General
Does the extruder work with a different hot end? Is the hot end getting hot? Did you change the thermistor setting in your firmware? Also what extruder are you using?by UkIan - General
Cool, I'm wiring up sockets to help me switch heads easier, so figured I'd checkby UkIan - Controllers
What diameter of wire do you suggest for hot end wire connecting the heater cartridge and separately for the heated bed? Thanksby UkIan - Controllers
QuoteAndrew Smith Belt, or proper high speed leadscrews. Threaded rod isn't fast enough. For a printer , belts are perfectly adequate and cheaper than screws. Any printers using lead screws for x and y? I asked about this a while ago, and there are some issues. I'm talking Cartesian style, not delta BTW.by UkIan - General
I would love one, are diamond tools you mention expensive? I'm assuming it requires more than a metal bit coated in diamond dust.by UkIan - General
The e3d 6 is nice, It has a separate metal heatbreak and in fact you can replace any part of it in isolation. They sell the bits separately. J head I'm starting to believe is best for pla. I've also got a hexagon which made lovely prints. It is also all metal, but not as componentised as the e3dby UkIan - General
The venue is pretty cool, I keep almost getting one to run the printer off. I find it helpful to have a real laptop there at the moment though, so it has not come to pass. The surface pro is just an overpriced laptop. I had a pro 2 which failed to deliver on any level. The 3 is marginally more sensible, but still has the damp stupid kick stand. Going a bit ot, so back on track, Broadwell nextby UkIan - General
Which goes to show what a brilliant idea they had Funnily enough someone I know mentioned exactly this the other day and said something about it falling out of favour because of the complexity and cost. I think I might run with it though. The carriage feels sooo much nicer on the bars than the scritchy scratchy linear bearings version Love that photo btw, there are some interesting alternativby UkIan - Mechanics
If I get a. 25 nozzle and 32 x microstepping drivers I might actually achieve a negative speed!by UkIan - General
I'm all for throwing processor power at a problemby UkIan - General
Airfix was made of polystyrene, I don't know what those little games workshop figurines are made of, but they take a coat of acrylic paint. Is hips paintable? Abs and play don't like paint it seems. Also, smaller nozzles produce more detail? Sounds obvious, but I'm sure I've read here that isn't the case for a reason I can't recall. Tbanksby UkIan - General
Interesting, I guess you heat it to the lowest temp it flows and only heat it to stage five at the nozzle? For ramps, they pretty much all come assembled. The Stepper drivers slot in sockets, then all the wires for thing plug onto various pins. The price didn't look awful, but could be cheaper I think. Are you in the states? There are a surprising number of English and European people here andby UkIan - General
Quotecdru What advantage does a quartz tube as an insulator get you? Usually quartz is used for it's thermal strength and dimensional stability, not for it's thermal conductivity. Strength and stability doesn't really get you any benefit for how we use them. It sounds like he's using it for the heat break I would guess, or above that? Sounds interesting, lots of pics of the manufacture wouldby UkIan - General
Impressive print btw, do try WD40. I use it to remove anything stuck on to anything with tapes/labels, etc.by UkIan - General
Yes, I currently have half the resistance I need, so was going to add a second loop in series I think the trick *is* calculating the values correctly in the first place. I made a mistake somewhere, so I'm actually between where I want to be for direct replacement and where I want to be for more ampage :/by UkIan - Controllers
It will run on a Surface Pro (1,2,3) It won't run on a Surface. It won't run on any Windows phones, or any Windows RT tablets. Dell do some little tablets on which it should run because they actually run full windows. The easy way to tell is if the device is advertised with a picture of a desktop and start button, then you should be good. No picture, no go.by UkIan - General
It will likely be one of the other things on the list, unfortunately it's a long list, so there's a few things to check. Check your belts, how tight do they feel? They should be taut. Make sure the pulley gears on the motors are screwed on properly. Power on the machine, home all the axis, move them a little (Do all this in Pronterface or Repetier, etc). With it all still on see if there is mby UkIan - General

Excellent, I'll make the transition this evening then. I've been putting it off and off for no good reason.by UkIan - General
Good answer Mike, thanks. I'm pla all the way usually, but I've got some x carriage bits, hot end fan cowls, etc to print, so need the extra hest resistance. I was reading about chocolate printing BTW, it seems it's less suitable for structural parts even if they are tasty If you could recommend a good alternative to abs with good heat resistance and good strength that is easier to print, I'llby UkIan - General
My hunch is yes, if you look at what comes out of the berrybot, although that is a super human bit of fine engineering. For people using Bowden, do you experience issues because of it? Any photos and or advice gratefully receivedby UkIan - General
