Does anyone know if it would be possible to make your own heat bed for the print glass? I was thinking using a piece of aluminum with some form of high resistance wire or just a bunch of resistors taped with kapton tape to hold it down. Has anyone done this, or have any ideas?by AVRkire - Controllers
I am surprised that more people/companies don't use a z axis print bed and have the y axis and the x axis be at the top but fixed in the z axis. I know makerbot does this and so does type A machines, but not a lot of reprappers do it. Any reasons why? Are there mechanical downsides to this?by AVRkire - Mechanics
Thank you very much for all of this info! So it seems it is far more complicated than a simple swap out of 24V for 12V. I will need to make a lot of modifications to do this the right way. I guess I will just ask anyone who has used both 12V and 24V, if is worth it to do the upgrade. Starting from scratch I would definitely go the 24V route.by AVRkire - RAMPS Electronics
Hey everyone, I have been thinking of upgrading to a 24V, 17A 400W power supply for my mendelmax, and I was hoping some folks can help me out with some questions. 1) Has anyone who has upgraded from 12V to 24V noticed a difference? This is by far my biggest question. I can see how it would help heat the bed up faster being able to use a 24V heater in place of a 12V heater, but the steppers areby AVRkire - RAMPS Electronics

My j-head has been jamming waaaay too often, and someone suggested on another forum that I may not be getting enough grip on my hobbed bolt on my wade's extruder. Can anyone take a look at these pics and give me an opinion on if this may be a part of my problem? So with my kit, the seller suggested I tie all my fans into D9 on my Ramps so that when the extruder is going, my fans are going. I have noticed that my fans seem very slow, and 2 of them just flicker without actually going on. I am wondering if it would make more sense to just connect all my fans right to my power supply and give them a constant 12 V, so that they are always on and not runningby AVRkire - Mechanics
I am very new here, so take this for what its worth. When my print sticks, it sticks! I cannot even think about taking it off until the bed is completely cooled off, or the same thing happens. I notice that when the bed is cool, I can very carefully pry it in different areas until the whole thing pops off. Have you let the bed completely cool?by AVRkire - Printing
Right onto the glass?by AVRkire - Printing
My kit came with PET sheet for my glass, but it is quickly getting messed up. I am wondering if I need to buy more PET sheets (expensive) or if I can print right onto the glass?by AVRkire - Printing

James and waitaki, Thanks for the replies. James, I don't think it's the holes int he x ends because I can see the rod that is binding and on neither the top nor bottom does it seem to be even within a mm of the plastic, my setup has a bearing in the x end and the threaded rod is pretty well in the bearing. I think waitaki is right, but I am not exactly sure. It's very odd, it will go severaby AVRkire - Mechanics
I am working on a new rewrap and I have both 5/16" - 18 and 3/8" - 16 threaded rods on hand. Would one be better than the other for a z- axis? Thanks.by AVRkire - Mechanics
Komb, Thanks much for the suggestions! I am currently at 515.166 for the E steps in Marlin, and my slicer settings have 3mm filament, and 1 for extrusion multiplier. I am using 3mm ABS. How would you suggest I go about this? Should I try a 4mm for filament, or perhaps a multiple of .8 or so for the extrusion multiplier, or would you lower the E steps in Marlin? I am assuming this is trial anby AVRkire - Printing
Having some problems getting started. I have had a few smaller successsful prints, but the last few have had problems. Latest problem is my nozzle is getting clogged. This last time it happened on the 3rd layer. I have linked a pic showing what looks like blotches or blobs of ABS which are getting stuck to the surface and I THINK, what is causing the clogging as it is getting stuck on the nozzby AVRkire - Printing
Hey everyone, I just completed my mendelmax a few days ago, and I am getting occaisonal binding on my z axis, and I really cannot figure out why. As best as I can tell, my rods are all perfectly leveled, and my x axis is perfectly parallel to my bed. It does not happen every time, and the amount that it happens varies. Last night about 1/2 hour into a print, my 3rd print on my printer, I notiby AVRkire - Mechanics
OK, thanks for the tip! Currently my first layer height is 100%, do you have a recommendation to try?by AVRkire - Printing
I finally got my printer set up, and I THINK calibrated correctly. I am using a heated bed up to 110. I have a PET sheet covering my glass and have cleaned it thoroughly with windex. A j-head up to 220. I set up z end stop so that the nozzle is 2 sheets of paper off the bed for home. In slicer I am using .2mm level heights, although I have tried .3 and .4 as well. I am doing a skirt. Whatby AVRkire - Printing
Reprap squad and knimrod, thanks guys. This may be an upgrade I try to make once I get printing if I am not happy with the accuracy. Very helpful, thanks!by AVRkire - Reprappers

I am finishing up my mendelmax, and I am wondering what the opinions are on endstop placement. The plans I am using call for min on z and y, but max on x. It would seem to me that min would be better for all 3 x,y and z home, but I would like to get some opinions on this. My z steppers are bottom mount steppers if that matters. Hey everyone, So I finished my build of my mendel, and I need to install the firmware to get this bad boy running. I downloaded the Marlin firmware, and I see the configuration file. Problem is I really am not sure how to configure it for my exact machine. Some of the things are obvious like using 34 for the Ramps 1.4, but many things I have no clue about. For example: Homing feedrate DEFAby AVRkire - Firmware - mainstream and related support
Everyone, thanks for the replies. I discovered that my x carriage was not 100% level on both sides, so it was binding on one side. Once I got it exactly level, this stopped happening. Thanks for your help everyone!by AVRkire - Reprappers
Hey everyone, I am finishing up my mendelMax 1.5 and I am noticing that when I try to zero out my z axis, at the very bottom when I turn the motor, the rod is turning slightly, however, the extruder seems to not move for a few micro turns, then all the sudden kind of clunk down to the bottom and make up the lost turns. I am not sure what this is, but I have seen some use a spring solution in thby AVRkire - Reprappers

Hey everyone, building a Mendel using Ramps 1.4, my steppers are Kysan 1124090 motors. They have the following colors and letters from the spec sheet: A=Red B=Yellow C=Green D=Blue My Ramps board is asking for 2B, 2A, 1A, 1B I am really confused on how I should connect my wires to my Ramps board, I have been reading many different things for different steppers.
