I've been playing around with kisslicer a bit over the last couple of days and I'm impressed with the print quality and especially impressed with the support material generation. It's kind of inspired me to build a bigger, more, stable printer using 20mm extrusion with a beafed up X axis to take a dual header extruder. The idea being to print support using poly vinyl alchohol and structure in PLAby MotoBarsteward - Printing
I now swear by a 50% mix of PVA glue and water. Paint it onto a clean class bed and let it dry for a few minutes. I print my PLA at 195'C for the first layer and drop to 175'C for the rest. I reaIise that temperatures don't necessarily transfer from one machine to the next but what I'm saying is that the 195'C represents about the hotest I'd want to print at. I usually have my bed at 45'C but Iby MotoBarsteward - Printing
OK, I've raised an issue for this on github but there is no way of posting the files there so I'm doing so here. Everyone is welcome to have a look and come up with ideas. I'm trying to do a better quality print of the Luxo Jnr Snap Together from thingiverse. Part of my problem is that the lamp shade is difficult to print if the STL is just dropped on the platter so I spun it around so it sits oby MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
If you set the base level and at the correct height then you do not need to set the Z offset. I used to set the bed as closely as I could and then try to fine adjust using the Z offset until until I realised that negative values did not work because the Z axis end stop switch stopped the negative values doing anything. An alternative is to level off the bed but with the head pressing the bed downby MotoBarsteward - General Mendel Topics
Just installed 0.9.1 on my Mac (Lion 10.7.4) using the binary install. Dragged the Slic3r icon from the rpm to my Applications folder. The gui loads up OK. I add a simple stl file and click Generate G-Code and the gui immediately vanishes. Am I doing something wrong in the install?by MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
I would be incline to agree assuming, that is, that your extruder is calibrated correctly.by MotoBarsteward - Printing
Looking at your first layer of your shot glass, I'd say either your extruder is extruding too much plastic (check the calibration of the extruder) or the head is too close for the first layer. If you have one or both problems you get the ridges that you see formed in your first layer. When the second layer is printed, the head hits these bobbles and ridges and stalls the steppers.by MotoBarsteward - General Mendel Topics
Or the head hitting bobbles of printed plastic. Is your extruder calibrated? Try using z lift and retract.by MotoBarsteward - General Mendel Topics
Slic3r 0.8.4 has two known issues that make interim dimensions too small and exteria ones two big. The fixes for these are in the current master branch and, hopefully, will be delivered soon.by MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
I get this from time to time. First thing to do is check that your belts are running true and not running off of the bearing guides. This could be your stepper drivers shutting down briefly due to getting too hot. Check the obvious issues with friction. With the power turned off, you should be able to move the bed (Y axis) and head ( X axis) easily. If there is a lot o drag, check that the smoothby MotoBarsteward - Printing
Is this the first layer? It looks like it. I don't think your problem is so much that the extrusions are too close together but more that you are extruding too much plastic. There are two likely reasons for this: - Have you calibrated your extruder? Check that when you tell it to extrude 30mm of stock filament, that this is what it does. The other thing that can cause this bunching is having thby MotoBarsteward - Printing
This is me trying to understand what you are saying, Nophead. By die swell, are you saying that the plastic density just before the plastic exits the nozzle is higher than just after it exits? If it's not this then the only other way I can see is that the plastic velocity in the nozzle is higher than just after it exits. I can understand this as there will be friction with the trailing edge ofby MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
I have a ABSPrusa mendel. With the thing on the desk with the Y axis motor nearest me, I have it so that the XY home is in the bottom left corner. Increasing X goes to the right. Increasing Y makes the bed move towards me.This is the correct orientation for XY wrt Z. So, with the end stop sensors on the X and Y placed so that this is home, you may need to swap two of your X stepper wires and/or tby MotoBarsteward - Printing
A fan, after the first layer would improve things. Your corners will be tighter and your layers should stack a lot better. Until I built a controlled fan onto my X carriage, I just used a desk fan on low. I waited until after the first layer before turning it on though.by MotoBarsteward - Printing
Tried the desk fan. Didn't make much difference but screwed up the cross bars. The over-hanging side of the helix is pretty atrocious. I have just started using a brand new 100mm hank of Faberdashary Earl Grey 3mm PLA having used prety well every other colour in their range to print angry birds. I'm going to re-calibrate and check my machine as the print quality is off from what it used to be. Bby MotoBarsteward - Competitions
I have had problems with 0.8.4 in that the only way to get the actual extruded width to be the same as what slic3r calculates is to reduce the extrusion multiplier. But then, I found, the print quality is not good. There are two issues (confirmed) in 0.8.4: - Perimeters are placed outside of where they should be by 0.1mm and the actual extrusion width is quite a bit larger than what slic3r thinksby MotoBarsteward - Slic3r
I use these people. They only do PLA but it's reasonably priced by the meter. Their delivery is very quick and they are very helpful and friendly. They also put little freebees in the box!by MotoBarsteward - General
I have a 16 year old son who is a school pupil. This has allowed me to download Audodesk Inventor 2013 for free. Strictly for his use only, of course. 'He' notices that you can print to stl directly. Anyone got any experience of using Inventor? what 3D print settings work well for you?by MotoBarsteward - General
Yes. Bleeding obvious really. Should have thought of this myself. Time to wheel out the old desk fan, me thinks. Sublime Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Do you have a fan blowing from one side only?by MotoBarsteward - Competitions
I'm having a go at this as well although I'm having a problem. One of the Helix has excess plastic like a fungus on one face. The other helix looks good and the bridges between the helices are well formed. I'm using lift and retraction. Looking closely, the overhangs are not very tidy. I'm using a 2 hour old 0.8.5 dev of slic3r from the master branch. Printing with 0.1mm layers 50%infill every 2by MotoBarsteward - Competitions
Thanks for the extra info... To make things easier for you in future, all you need to do is attach the .ini file in the slic3r folder under where Pronterface is installed. It conains all the settings and is easer to upload than the screen dumps. I see that you have the printer filament set at 3mm. Have you actually measured this? I know it says 3mm on the packaging but it is unusual to be exactlby MotoBarsteward - General Mendel Topics
Generally, to help you best, we need a little more information like what software and setting you are using. In this case, from the photos, although hard to tell because they are a bit.blurred, I'd say that you are not extruding enough plastic. Have you calibrated the pextruder? I'm using my phone to do this so cross references are difficult to do so just google 'extruder calibrate'. It also lookby MotoBarsteward - General Mendel Topics
I do this from time to time as well but sometimes, when I come down in the morning, said parts are either in a stringy mess on the floor or wrapped around the print head. Sorry, I thought I replied to this yesterday but I opviosly forgot to press 'Post message'. I follow the instructions here which allows me to build and use the latest and greatest on the master branch. Don't get me wrong, mine was tight but I guessed it was meant to have a reasonable amount of friction. I only had to clean it up really. Yours looks like it wouldn't fit at all. I printed mine using 0.8.4 but I used nophead's suggestion and adjusted the extrusion multiplier to give the correct wall thickness but the print was quite week then. Not sure what you mean by "do not connect together". When I printed mine, my slicer was still making holes too small so I used M2 nuts, bolts and washers. The duct is intended for use on a 40mm fan. This was not having the desired cooling effect so I've just purchased a 38x38 mm fan from Maplin. However, I'm finding that this fan, being a three wire fan, does not play well with the thingiverse faby MotoBarsteward - General Mendel Topics

If you are printing with Slic3r 0.8l.4 then I had problems with this a. calculating the wrong extrusion width and b. putting the extrusions in the wrong place. This resulted in outside dimensions being roughly one extrusion width to big and inside ones being one extrusion width too small. Try and give the latest dev build fro the master branch a spin. I'll be honest, I've not had chance to try itby MotoBarsteward - Printing
