Doh after many tries I hadn't changed the EEPROM value so the wrong settings weren't being overwritten...by mikefazz - Repetier
I recently switched the electronics of my spiderbot (small delta) from megatronics to RADDS. After working through a couple odd issues I have been stuck with trying to get the X, Y, Z axes to move. If I hit 'home all' or try to change the Z position the motors hum but don't move. It acts like the endstops are triggered but they are not. I have tried the 9.2 and 10.0 firmware. So I am looking to replace one of my controllers (megatronics) which seems to have issues and move up to an Ultratronics controller. I have a RADDS setup on another printer but the ultratronics looks to have all I need in a single board (32bit, 3 extruders, 3 TC, ethernet)... actually more than I need. I see the dev branch of repetier supports it which is the firmware I prefer to use... My queby mikefazz - Controllers
Hello I wanted to post information for my business here in Seattle WA My business focuses on 3D printing for both the medical community and the general public. I can segment anatomy from medical scans (mostly CT and MRI) to create various anatomical models. I also offer mechanical CAD design work. I currently have 3 FDM printers: Spiderbot, RoStockMAX, and RoStockFAZZ (large custom designby mikefazz - Job Shop: I make stuff!
Here is my updated system, Improvements: - E3D Hot end - Potentiometer and LM317 voltage regulator to control spooling - Gear Motor I have been able to reduce ABS, PLA, and PC. I couldn't get nylon (taulmen 618) to work it doesn't seem to like to be pulled, either the temp is too high and it drops out of the hot end or the temp is too low and it doesn't stretch. PC worked at much lower temby mikefazz - Plastic Extruder Working Group
Hi Alexella, Yes it works... for the most part. I still get issues with the extruder skipping which means a pause and break in the extruded filament and another takeup spool needed. Probably going a bit too fast... . I could try swapping filament around but I found this interesting and educational... also I will have most the parts ready if I ever get a filastruder. A couple new things: - Iby mikefazz - Plastic Extruder Working Group
Great idea Joar I have been working on this for a while, hopefully after my next revision it will finally be working good enough to post the design online (mine is for delta type printers though). here is an earlier version, I have since added bushings and made a few other modifications Your design looks good not sure why you have the springs exposed. I would allow more travel, I am shootingby mikefazz - Mechanics
So I have a few spools of 3mm filament from before I got with the times and switched over to 1.75. I want to eventually make my own filament so have been playing around with adding various components to reduce the filament diameter. I finally have something that works decently and I was able to make if from various stuff I had left from other projects. So the main components visible in the vby mikefazz - Plastic Extruder Working Group
I have moved on to other printers but I still have a working Prusa2 for anyone looking to get into 3D Printing Also lots of 3mm filament left over from before I switched to 1.75mm filament. Mikeby mikefazz - Washington, Seattle RepRap User Group
So I have been working on setting up a third extruder on my spiderbot. I managed to fry part of one of my megatronics boards when I turned up the stepper current too high. I found part of my problem, the step and dir pin numbers are flipped from what is specified on the megatroics schematic (D23, D24). I replaced the megatronics board and stepper driver with brand new ones but I still cannot gby mikefazz - Repetier

Selling my modified cupcake CNC $450 I also have lots of 3mm filament of different types to sell... Let me know if interested. Mikeby mikefazz - Washington, Seattle RepRap User Group
I finally put up a geared extruder I designed a while back for 3mm filament. I started work on a 1.75mm design but not sure if geared extrusion is really necessary for the smaller filament. Direct drive seems to be adequite...by mikefazz - Mechanics
Hi all I added a few more pics to the thingiverse page so it is easier to see the finished hot end. dissidence Having a lathe is nice and while I would like to say making my own hot ends will save me the expense of buying them I would need to make a whole lot of them to offset the cost. I do hope to go to multi-extruding soon so 2-3 extruders per machine would start adding up. My guess is my hby mikefazz - General
Hi Liquid, I have the same lathe as you and have tried to make an all metal hot end for a while. I settled on this design: I mentioned it here: I have switched to 3/8-24 from 3/8-16 I can send you some of the 3/8-16 parts and stock if you want to play around with that type of design. I think the biggest challenge is getting the SS hole very smooth. I tried using a reamer but my hot ends keby mikefazz - Developers
I could certainly remove the inner wall in the SS section and extend the bowden tube all the way to the tip. I used tubing from McMasterCarr (51805K72) for the bowden section which is rated to 260C which is the same as the liner (both teflon). The only concern is that it could put some more stress on the push fit connector. I think the liner section holds the extra back pressure from any PLA/by mikefazz - General
Been working for a while to come up with a decent home-made hot end. This one has been working well enough for me to put up As I still hope to go to higher temps I wonder if there are any ceramic tubes that would be smooth like teflon Mikeby mikefazz - General
I have been doing some printing in my garage here in washington, probably in the 0-10C range and haven't had any issue I associate with cold. I think the cold may help to cool the shaft above the hot zone and keep PLA from binding. Then again I have a 100W cartridge heater on my old suped up cupcake I haven't bothered much with ABS so can't speak to that.by mikefazz - General
Thanks fir the help aka... I figure asking with some humility will get better results. QuoteEngineering is engineering and requires a greater grip on reality than most can bear. Ok so forgive a Mech E for my lack of experience with steppers but here is my issue: My steppers have 8 wires I can go through and find all the pairs easily enough. I can then join any of the pairs together to double the resistance but How can I know if I am not connecting one of the pairs backwards to the other? I can flip the two wires at the stepper board but that doesn't really fix the proby mikefazz - Controllers
Thanks so much for the info, I have been stuck on this for a while with no clear direction as to if it was my wiring or something I missed with the software. There were a couple other mentions that the spec sheet on wiring for the Keling motor was wrong. The reprap instructions follow the spec sheet here and is how I have tried wiring mine. Thanks for the info it did seem like it melted at too high a temperature. A soldering iron did the job though. Not sure about the oil... if paste does dry out if not used right away I definitely left it for a month or so before using. So if you have no other way to get paste this can be an option though not ideal.by mikefazz - Controllers
So I saw some solder paste at the hardware store in the plumbing section. Something like this: I bought it on a whim doubting its usefulness. It was cheap though. I finally got around to trying it yesterday with my first attempt at SMT soldering. It came out of a somewhat fine nozzle ~2mm I then slid it around to the pads. It had the consistency of wet sand so wasn't the easiest thing toby mikefazz - Controllers
So its been a while since I last posted but I have made some progress in the last few months. I have all the structure in place along with the stepper motors and chain. Most the electronics are done too. Some features that may help others: - attaching the gears to the motors (from old bike de-railers) is accomplished by drilling out the metal bushings and tapping them for small pinion screws.by mikefazz - Reprappers
I think I have the same issue. Same motor and board. When I tested each board I got them to work OK but when trying to move in the software I can only get the small movements 0.1mm and 1mm to work 10mm is very problematic. How do I tune the stepper pot? Do I just turn the pot till the stationary humming is the lowest.by mikefazz - Controllers
I have a repstrap that is far from working right now but I have most the parts. I just need to put the time in now. I don't have any filament yet I am idealistically/niavly trying to make my own from recycled plastic. Any suggestions on a good local supplier so I don't need to pay the material cost in shipping?by mikefazz - Washington, Seattle RepRap User Group

I like the concept of keeping it all in a box. I especially like the use of the electronics' heat to heat the build box very efficient concept. I got a server rack and was easily able to fit the electronics in it (though it was pretty thin). See my pick: What isn't shown is that I was easily able to fit some drawer sliders on it and it cleanly fits in an old AV rack I made years ago. This mby mikefazz - Reprappers
Ohh thanks for the response Sid and James I was just talking with one of my roommates about this last night. He works at a bike shop so I may get some used ones cheap... I don't see much for tensioning?? I assumed I would need to pull them tight but maybe not. I think its time to clean off the work bench and get back into it.by mikefazz - Reprappers
Been an while since posting as I have been spending my free time mostly on doing some home re-wiring... Anyone tried using bicycle chain instead of the belt? I would keep a good tension on it but of course the accuracy is suspect. I would have to use some larger sprockets like the front crank granny gear size. I am still un-decided about a belt or low pitch lead screw.by mikefazz - Reprappers
