Hi Prober, i've actually probed with different materials and powders - white or translucent materials are tricky with 1070nm wavelength ... most energy went through or is reflected diffuse ... here a CO2-laser with tenfold wavelength should work much better. Anyway, i tried with white MACOR - it's melting, but didn't evaporate for drilling ... the same with clear glass-spheres or the white/tranby VDX - Wanted
Hi Cathal, ... don't worry, the gas-support is on the way I have some pnematic/vacuum tools as valves, 2-/3-way-switches, connectors, tubes and such ... and found yesterday in our german CNC-forum some more festo-parts for switching and directing gas-flows, so now i can build some more really sophisticated setups for pure or mixed gases or vacuum. ... i tried with 2K-silicone (capable of 350 centigrades continuous and 450 centigrades short exposure) with moulding chocolate and roses metall (melts at 98 centigrades) - image atached. As i had only a small amount of Roses metall, it wasn't enough to fill the complete cavity, so the backplate isn't complete. Hi Sam, ... yes, i know, it's the Carbon changing chemistry - but sometimes a specificied CO2-Argon-Mixture can result in interesting steel-/alloy-properties My intention is to use Argon, as it's common and therefor not so expensive like other inert gases. Hi Prober, ... or build your nozzles without bore and drill it later in any desired diameter - i have a 50-Watt-laser with 1070nm wavelength and spot diamter down to 10 microns, so it should be possible to 'drill' holes down to 0.02 mm in diameter. Only one problem left - for smaller holes you need much more force/pressure, so my feeling with the actual design limits the practical diameters toby VDX - Wanted
Hi swighton, ... AFAIK the torque (or motor-current) isn't adjusted by software but with a trim-poti on the corresponding driver. The PWM-settings change the speed and only when the ON/OFF-timing is bad, you'll have problems with loosing steps or such ... Viktorby VDX - Mechanics

But the position is only so exact as the magnetic orientation between the rotor-teeth and the magnetization of the stator-teeth and is something 'elastic', so the absolute accuracy is depending of load or external forces, friction, damping or such ... My CNC-mill-controller is capable of 10kHz max. clocking speed - with fullstep an ramping i'll get max. 2kHz safe ... with half-stepping i'll get max. 6khz. ... i learned that with microstepping i can get much higher clock-frequencies at smaller steps. With my 1/256-microstepping drivers and max 10kHz clock frequency i have an 'optimum' around 1/16 microstepping at 10kHz versus max. fequency below 2kHz at fullstep (depending of resonancy and mass-loads) or 6kHz at half-stepping with my Isel-drivers. ... a hint for making aluminium-constructions much more stiffer/sturdier: - build your frame with thin angles and sheets, insert some crossing threaded rods or long screws for fixing the outer dimensions and then fill the hollow frame with a sand-epoxy mixture (e.g. 32%-34% coarse sand, 60% fine sand and 8%-6% 2K-epoxy). Hi Marcus, in the X-axis, where the wire forms an endless loop, i inserted a wire-tensioner ... and in the y-axis both ends are simply fixed with screws to the left-side columns ... ... recently i've got a 50Watt Ytterbium-fibre-laser which is capable of cutting thin steelplates or melting metal-powder (or other materials too). My plans are to place the optic head along my CNC-millhead, so i have a defined reference-position of the laser spot when homing the machine. Hi Marcus, ... in the images of my linked previous post, especially the image "X-axis.jpg", i used nearly the same geometry (only rotated 90 deg) for the X-axis of a laser-plotter. With the first prototype and 0.3mm thick steelwires i had some elasticity resulting in oscillation along diagonal paths (visible in the cutting trace) with an amplitude of nearly 0.2mm at a step-resolution of 0.04mm.by VDX - Reprappers
Hi Marcus, ... in past i built a laserplotter with steel-wires for moving the axes (look here: ) - you need high tension for the wires, so normal plastic isn't suitable for motor-spools and feeding rolls. I used lathed aluminium-spools and nylon-coated bearings where i lathed a V-groove in the nylon for the wire. Solid Nylon, POM or similar plastics can be used, but the reprapped body isn't sby VDX - Reprappers

... i remember a tricky/funny way of outputting high complex binary patterns for CNC-machines without any CPU - simply attach a binary counter/latch to an EPROM where the dir-/step- or coil-activation-patterns are stored in ascending order.
