I think it is the screw connectors that are often the problem on the Ormerod 2.(several people have had their beds burn out) . I removed the screws completely and pushed the wire through from the bottom, then soldered the wires directly to the pads on top of the heat bed. Although this improved my heatbed performance, I'm still not sure if it will get to ABS temperature. I will test tonight andby jamesf - Ormerod
Room temperature 15 C Erik? Always thought you were the coolest frood hereby jamesf - Ormerod
If you have an Ormerod 2 - I found removing the screw connectors and soldering the wires directly to the bed has speeded up the heating of the bed. I haven't tried ABS temperatures yet so no idea what maximum I could achieve though. Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Z=0 is as near to the bed as you can get it. Have you followed the calibration instructions on the website - to use the Z-sensor to zero Z or are you doing it manually? Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Erik, I am also considering S3D. Asked Dave his opinion on another thread as well. It seems you are happy with it? Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Thanks Dave, have been looking at it what I like most is the preview option. To be able to see better how the printer will behave with setting changes before printing would be great. Considering what my printer cost I actually don't think it's that expensive, although certainly not an amount I would spend without due consideration. cheers Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Hi. If you are printing PLA then 185 for hot end and 65 for bed should be fine Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Thanks Dave Will implement those solutions for my next big print - pretty much what I thought anyway. I am considering Simplify 3D and see mixed reviews - do you consider it worth its price? Cheers Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Hi all With internal perimeters (like screw shafts etc) there is a seam of plastic that forms at the point the the perimeter is started and ends. A blob at each layer that then builds into a seam that has to be filed away. Questions : 1) is this an issue with not enough filament retraction ? 2) does the slic3r feature giving random start points to perimeters have any merit - or does it leadby jamesf - Ormerod
Quotedmould That's a terrible layout! There are not nearly enough empty beer bottles for a start, and I can see a few small areas of unused work surface that could easily have been filled with some bits of discarded wire or loose nuts & bolts. There is no area of my bench that is under less than 3 layers of junk essential equipment. I'd show you if I could only find where I put my camerby jamesf - Ormerod
Eric you will find those aquarium pumps are generally very simple in design, so the air regulation is usually awful! Often the best way is to leave the pump on maximum output, split the air output and bleed off any excess air through one side rather than use the built in regulation. You could use something like this to regulate the amount of air you bleed off Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Thanks all for sharing your designs. I see Visual54 uses the same workbench layout as I do Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
I also remove filament after every session so have not seen breakage yet. Too humid here at the moment and want to keep it as dry as possible. Do you have a link to the parts for your filament stand - I like the design? Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
There have been a number of problems with the Ormerod 2 bed. Mostly beds burning out because of the connection getting very hot due apparently to poor contact and increased resistance. Perhaps you have finally solved the mystery - there were some thoughts that a bad crimp may be the problem, but I dont think anyone thought of them being too tight! I removed the connectors from mine and solderedby jamesf - Ormerod
Thanks that's what I thought, then saw some heated debates regarding Pyrex versus normal glass etc.by jamesf - Ormerod
I want to have a few glass beds prepared to speed up going from one print to the next. Not having to wait for one to cool would be great. Is there any specific requirements for glass considering the high temperature of the bed?by jamesf - Ormerod
Oh yes, love the rough look on that spider. I will try the sandpaper trick!by jamesf - Ormerod
Thanks for all your help Erik, I spent some time today playing with slic3r settings on a small print. One quickly gets a feel for it, and when something goes wrong it's not too hard to work out why. Sorry about the arachnophobia - when I was young I had the same problem. I couldn't look at pictures of spiders without starting to itch! When reading narural history books I would always skip the sby jamesf - Ormerod
Quotesteve0-uk lol its a better design/look than the newer one i thought thanks all :0) Lol. The one in the current documentation looks functional and attaches securely on both side. The one I have has nothing to hold it securely on the PSU side - just a slit the tightens around the edge of PSU - think it's the one you have - will check when I get home. Kept on slipping off during mounting -by jamesf - Ormerod
Thanks Eric, Do you use 40% even for the gears? And thanks for the ABS advice, I agree that Kapton is a pain. I was thinking of trying the 200mm wide tape so that I only need one piece. I adjust my nozzle very close to the bed, and if it wasn't for the small gaps / overlaps in the kapton I could get a completely smooth finish on the bottom surface. Should the x-runner and nozzle mount be 100%by jamesf - Ormerod
Hi All, Are there any specific slic3r recommendations for printing Ormerod parts? Layer height and fill? Want to print a few spares before trying ABS Thanks Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
While I was building the printer, I swore that would be the first piece I would redesign!by jamesf - Ormerod
After endless problems with the sensor I now home Z manually and have my bed perfectly level mechanically so I don't have to use bed compensation. I am waiting for DC42's sensor board, so not doing to bother struggling with the original board anymore. Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Xozip I think there was a firmware bug that caused printer to stop printing if PC went to sleep, I suppose that disconnecting would have the same effect (even when printing from SD card). I believe DC42's firmware fixed that. (and possibly later versions of RepRaps) Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Is the hotend fan working correctly / mounted the right way? Filament melting too far up the nozzle could cause backpressure? Not sure if that would be enough to stall the extruder drive but still allow manual feeding though. Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
Could it be interference generated by the fan power cables or even the magnets in the motors? Try twisting the fan wires together to create some shielding. We often do this with wiring on quad copter electronics. at the very least keep the sensor signal wires away from the fan wires and see if there's a difference. Jamesby jamesf - Ormerod
I also want to print it as quickly as possible. Thanks for the stl. When you print it, do you get the vertical axis at low infill as well? If so, is it stable enough to be useful for measurement? It would save a lot of print time.by jamesf - Ormerod
Thanks guys Eric I just wanted to make sure I had correct settings and wasn't sure what made the piece go from 30% fill to solid. I believe Dave has identified the correct parameter.by jamesf - Ormerod
Hi all, I want to edit the axis compensation STLto include only the 3 axis part. No sense in reprinting the measuring tool (wheel and 2 axis piece) every time I want to check calibration after modifying or working on printer. I obviously will have to slice it again, and I will use the slicer settings as in the g-code file currently provided with the firmware. My question : The slicer settingby jamesf - Ormerod
Before seeing your photos my initial reaction was : no way you can ship this printer without either breakage or major recalibration needed. But I see the packaging does look very good. It may be too good - is it possible to get the printer out of that packaging without major shift of an axis or accidentally breaking something? I have also seen how airline personnel handle packages - I would dby jamesf - Ormerod
