Waitaki - When your part warps or an overhang curls up and your bed can't go down and your nozzle can't go up what happens when the nozzle hits the cooled plastic in it's way?

Yes, springs help when a part warps.
I redesigned the bed mounts to use nyloc nuts. So far after a couple of months I haven't had to level it again.

Watertight? I don't think so...

With a parametric CAD like FreeCAD the grid isn't too important. Instead you create a rough sketch and then set all the dimensions and constraints that are requirements for the part.

Multiple times I have homed Z and old plastic/drool that I had forgotten about caused the nozzle to compress the bed springs slightly. I wouldn't like to think what might eventually snap if I kept doing that without springs.
I have a nyloc nut trap bed mount on Thingiverse for the RRP Mendel - perhaps it will work with the Huxley?

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions!
To clear some things up: I don't think making the rods longer will help - only raising them.
The picture is from the build instructions - my machine has been operating since last August but I've only been able to use the center of the bed.
I've put some tin foil under one corner to raise it by about 1mm and that has improved things somewhat but it st

I have the RepRapPro version of a Prusa Mendel and I have been struggling with bed leveling since last August. I now believe my problem is that the Y rods are too low at the front of the machine and need to be raised by about 1mm. I'm not sure how this is possible but the bed is tilted down towards the front of the machine for reasons unknown.
Here is what the Y rod arrangement looks at the fron

It's not. Four is, but it's a lot easier to deal with.

I have one. The only flaw I can see is the incredibly annoying and tedious bed leveling system with three screws. I understand over-constraining, etc. but it's a big pain for me. I'm tired of doing it and redoing it. Apart from that it works well.

I relied on Repetier Host to verify Slic3r output and it was a mistake - there were bugs in it's rendering that I thought were caused by Slic3r. Double-check with .

Increasing the number of skirt loops to two should turn it on however it doesn't. I reported a bug on github for this a couple of weeks ago. Waiting patiently for a fix...
Meanwhile you could try using the RepRapPro Slicer but it is painfully slow.

I reported multiple problems with FreeCAD. It was a completely frustrating two weeks trying to use it. The final response I got was that the developer doesn't test with Windows, only Linux. Since buying Alibre Design I haven't run into a single bug that stopped me from doing what I need and I've never looked back. YMMV

I bought through a reseller at a discount but that particular one is no longer selling it.
Without a subscription it appears (from my experience) you get all minor updates but not major updates.
Note that a new version (2013) is due to come out shortly. See the Alibre forum for more details.

I wasted weeks fighting bugs and limitations in all the free software out there. Eventually I caved and spent $160 on Alibre Design PE - extremely powerful, flexible and yes, you can make holes bigger later on. Free software is great but you have to consider how much time you spend on it. For me a small investment has saved me a lot of precious hours of my spare time.

I have the opposite problem. Originally I set my bed to be non-square 200 x 170. Now I cannot set it to be a square 200 x 200 - it remains non-square.

While the bed is cold put a thin, even layer of undiluted PVA glue onto the bed. Turn on the heatbed

I ended up working out the answers to my questions through trial and error. The result is here:
There are some critical bugs with AMF/multi-color support in Slic3r. I've put them on the issues list in github. Hopefully they will be fixed in the near future...

What is the current level of support for AMF in Slic3r? Specifically does it associate materials with extruders?
The current documentation states that it associates the first object with the first extruder, the second object with the second extruder, etc. which implies that you can only have one object per extruder.
However wouldn't it work better if volumes and materials were used instead?

Superglue definitely works on PLA... use it all the time.

What about coating in water-based polyurethane such as Varathane? If you try it please let us know how it turns out. It's been on my list of things to try for a while.

You said that one corner is 0.65mm higher/lower that the others. You should see that size of gap. My gap was about 1mm.

I was also disappointed with this. As supplied you can't achieve the stated build volume. However the machine now has a new mini extruder which mounts on the top rails of the way. I'm not sure if they are supplying it with new kits or only if you get the multi-colour upgrade. Perhaps you can ask them?

I had the exact same problem. Putting the edge of a steel rule diagonally on the plate clearly shows the warp.
RepRapPro replaced my plate with a new one under warranty and it is perfectly flat.

Divide into smaller parts and then glue/bolt/snap them together. From my experiments superglue bonds appear to be as strong, if not stronger than PLA.
With a single large print if something goes wrong then you are out a lot of time and money. These printers still have a significant learning curve and trial and error period.

I use 4:1 PVA and it works well except I struggle to apply it evenly with a brush. How do you manage it with a paper towel?

This year I am printing personalized Christmas gifts. I use Faberdashery plastic, which is probably the most expensive available, but it comes in a wide range of colours - perfect for making gifts. Even with the very high plastic cost it will end up saving me money overall compared to time and money going around the shops week after week struggling to find things.
In fact I estimate my machine w
