I'm really curious as to know what is happening between the different components on my controller (Melzi). As far as I'm aware the gcode created by the slicer is a long list of coordinates. This is then somehow processed by the stepper drivers which converts it into an electric pulse which translate to the correct number of steps for the according distance?! If anyone has a deeper understandinby Charles Fried - Firmware - mainstream and related support
Hi there, When I print something with a fairly large footprint (<100mm) the corners seems to come unstuck to the bed and curl up affecting the rest of the print. I'm printing PLA on a bed at 60 degrees which had just been covered with capton tape. At first I though the bed wasn't quiet level but after having gone over it a few times I'm wondering if something else could be causing this?! Coby Charles Fried - General
@garyhlucas Interesting story seems like a shame that they won't consider anyone with a degree even though the knowledge of practice is there. I have to intention of quitting university but this is something I would like to pursue on the side until I finish. @Dirty Steve Ok, maybe you are right it's not quiet ready to the general public so I would have to target the niche market. I do understand what you mean and I guess it is feasible. I've just never really been interested in doing one off pieces, I find it much more exiting to mass produce and sell to as many people as possible. I met someone last week who had good contact with the CEO, he told me some of it was subcontracted but that was in Eindhoven perhaps it's different at their office in New York. I'm surprised tby Charles Fried - General
@gmh39 "Since you are studying Furniture/product design, why not just using 3D printing a tool in your designs? Then if it is feasible you can sell design products that are made with a 3D printer, like furniture." I am currently using it as a rapid prototyping tool, I just don't see good profit being made selling printed items but more as a service for the design industry like Shapeways is doingby Charles Fried - General
@ohioplastics You're right I'm not going to learn anything about 3D printing at University but I'm fully aware of that. On the other hand I am very interested in what I am being tough and I am thoroughly enjoying it. @jamesdanielv Indeed I guess all that will be done for the business plan. @jesse I find your point a little confusing, could you be a little more precise. @Irish_Steve Couldn'tby Charles Fried - General
Very nice, thanks for the update. I'm still not very impressed by the aesthetics of the printers though, I think a lot could be improved to make one stand out.by Charles Fried - General
Hi there, First of all let me briefly introduce myself, I am in my third year of University studying Furniture and Product Design and currently on a 6 month internship in the Netherlands as a Junior Designer. My skills are mainly 3D based; modeling, rendering, problem solving, product development. Ideally I am looking for some sort of business partner, to set up something in the UK who would beby Charles Fried - General
Hi there, When I plug in my Ramps 1.4 through usb the green LED 1 starts flashing straight away, even though I'm not uploading anything. When I do try to upload it just never ends. I'm guessing some sort of reset would work?! I have tried holding the reset button but the problem still persists. Help is much appreciated! Thanks!by Charles Fried - RAMPS Electronics
I just realized I've only got power coming through the 11A input and nothing through the 5A could this be the reason? If so I'm guessing I will need an ATX power supply? I though this was just an optional input?!?by Charles Fried - General Mendel Topics
The extruder thermistor seems to be working, the bed one is a little high though; SENDING:M105 ok T:20 B:83by Charles Fried - General Mendel Topics
Uploaded the firmware once again, seemed to have gone well but still no response from prontface. This is all I get; Connecting... start Printer is now online. SD init fail ok T:0 B:0by Charles Fried - General Mendel Topics

Hi there, After having replaced my Melzi with a RAMPS 1.4, I uploaded Merlin to the board using Arduino. Unfortunately once prontface is connected none of of the actions seem to work. It it worth noting that the printer was working before the controller change. How can I troubleshoot this? How can I check my hardware is actually still working? Help is much appreciated. Thanks Charlesby Charles Fried - General Mendel Topics
Re-uploaded the Merlin software and that did the trick.by Charles Fried - RAMPS Electronics
Hi there, Just fitted a new RAMPS 1.4 to my printer, did a few changes in Arduino before launching prontface and this is what I get when trying to connect; Connecting... ~†ø~˜€fæàžþž˜˜~f†ø†žžfæàžþž˜˜††žf~ffžøž~`~f`˜€ fæàžþž˜˜˜`fæàžþž˜˜††žf~ffžøž~``fà`˜€fæàžþž˜˜fæàžþž˜˜††žf~ffžøž~`~f``˜€ fæàžþž˜˜††ž`æø~þžfæàžþž˜˜††žf~ffžøž~`~f`˜€þžžž˜€fæàžþž˜˜††žfþffžøž~`~fà``˜€ fæàžþž˜˜††žf~ffžøž~`~˜xf``˜€ fæàby Charles Fried - RAMPS Electronics

Hi there, I've just finished replacing my Melzi Board with a 1.4 Ramps but I'm still confused as to why this happened? I haven't had the chance to test everything but could this also have blown the thermistor (They're not letting any current through), heaters and possibly the motors? Thanks for the help!by Charles Fried - Controllers
Hi there, My Melzi board recently had a short circuit and I'm looking for a replacement part. After having a look around I'm very confused by the differences of the controllers and I'd be very grateful if someone could clear this up. What's the differnce between Sanguinololu and Arduino? What is RAMPS? Am I right in guessing that Merlin in the software installed on the controller? Many Thankby Charles Fried - General Mendel Topics
Ok, after doing a few resistance test with the voltmeter is seems like I will need a new controller.by Charles Fried - General Mendel Topics
Looks like there has been a short circuit and the connector started to melt. I am still able to connect to the console through usb does that mean the console is fine?by Charles Fried - General Mendel Topics
Hi there, I tried connecting to my Mendel through prontface and I get this error: could not open port COM3: Access is denied, although it was working fine yesterday. I have checked the usb and they're both on COM3 but the baud rate on the device is keeps resetting itself at 9600 as opposed to 115200 on prontface. It it also worth pointing out that the usb cables gets very hot very quickly andby Charles Fried - General Mendel Topics
I am using a Mendel. The support material is meant to be one smooth line but is filled with holes and the edges of my models are also very poor (blobby), especially where it was bridging. Any ideas on how to correct this? The extruder seems to be dragging a little but in my opinion not enough to be causing this. Any help is much appreciated. I'm running Windows through bootcamp, netfab seemed to do the trick. Thanks for the help!by Charles Fried - Slic3r
I've rotated several times in Rhino and it still comes up in the same orientation. I will try Meshlab though. It seems like Slic3r is missing a very basic function!by Charles Fried - Slic3r
Hi there, I have split an object I am trying to print in two half's but I am struggling to work out how to lay the object on it's cut face. The rotating tools only seem to rotate around the z axis. Thanks for your help!by Charles Fried - Slic3r
HI there, I'm a furniture designer currently on placement in London, learning to program Cnc Machines (Flexicam) to make high end furniture. I've almost finished building a mendal but I find the scale of it a little limited and I'm looking to build a bigger printer with a printable area of at least a cube of 1m. The Idea would be to print parts with wax which could then be used to cast aluminiumby Charles Fried - RepLab Working Group
