I originally looked at Interlloy but couldn't see anything for sure on their website about purchasing (ie: over the counter or web). They have offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Mackay and Albury though, so they're definitely good on the location front. I also found another place in Cairns called Sharplift that sell 5/16" steel bar (7.97mm, close enuff for Mendel), but Iby Cefiar - Australia, Brisbane RepRap User Group
Someone mentioned elsewhere that they couldn't find any 8mm Stainless Steel bar here in Aus... Was looking for something else and came across this: 8mm Stainless Steel bar May not be the cheapest, but it's a start. Note: They're in NSW, but ship Aus wide.by Cefiar - Australia, Brisbane RepRap User Group
NEMA23's really do have a torque advantage, but they are very heavy. The 17's are no where near as heavy, and for a Mendel design usually have enough torque. If any of your motors move with an axis (eg: extruder), then you need to make sure that any motor that moves that axis can handle the extra weight of the motor you choose to sit on it with ease. In a Mendel, the Extruder is moved by the X aby Cefiar - General

FTV_GTp: Yup. A number of us Australians here, and I'm in Melb... I'm actually in the process of building my Mendel (no where near finished, and found I'm missing a few key things which are currently shipping or that I'm yet to purchase). I've got all the RP bits though. Work and other things have intruded into my build time. FTV_GTp: Also check out CCHS (Melbourne Hackespace). They've got a Maby Cefiar - General
Definitely worth subscribing to reprap-dev, IMO. Been lurking there ever since buzz told me it was open to all a few weeks back when I saw him in person.by Cefiar - General
I know that Buzz has gotten this board going and I think he may have more info on it. I also seem to remember him saying something about putting info on the wiki (not sure if it was "have to" or "have done" though). They've got it connected to an Arduino Mega and running a Mendel (at the Brisbane Hackerspace aka HSBNE). FWIW: They're using the Relay output to control the extruder heating elementby Cefiar - Controllers
Check out HSBNE (Brisbane Hackerspace), as they have a Mendel very close to working (config issues mainly). Also, on the HSBNE mailing list there are people trying to organise a Gold Coast Hackerspace. Might be worth your while getting involved if you're not 100% on electronics, as they could be able to help.by Cefiar - Australia, Brisbane RepRap User Group
FWIW: It might be worth mentioning which country you are located in, as then you might find someone local who can help.by Cefiar - Wanted
Your second fix in your pic won't work. You've forgotten to cut the other half of that track, so it'll be the same electrically as when shorted. Just cut the track close to where the wire is, and you'll be sorted.by Cefiar - For Sale
Matt: Hackerspace Brisbane (HSBNE) currently have a not-quite functional Darwin (broken extruder) and a not-quite calibrated Mendel (Alignment issues). FWIW, I'm sure someone like Buzz from the Hackspace would be happy to show you the stuff they have currently and what's happening, if you're interested in reprap.by Cefiar - Australia, Brisbane RepRap User Group
jmarsden: As noted in my post, I haven't tried the reprap host software yet. It was more a general observation that the default Java on Ubuntu can have issues sometimes (like any piece of software), and that he could install sun Java to try/eliminate the issue. He tried and still couldn't get it to work, which points to his issue most likely being unrelated. It's good to see that openjdk runs thby Cefiar - Reprappers
A common problem under Ubuntu with anything java is the default version of Java that comes in Ubuntu doesn't quite cut it in some cases. You probably need to: Install the package sun-java6-jre or mebbe sun-java6-jdk if you want to develop stuff. This is in the partner repository, which you will need to enable as it is not one of the defaults. Run 'sudo update-alternatives --config java' and cby Cefiar - Reprappers

My spare tinyUSB USB-TTL converter (which was offered here) is now in the hands of the CCHS (Melbourne HackerSpace). FWIW: If you need to use it (eg: as a bootloader), they will most likely be happy to let you bring your project over to program it there.by Cefiar - Australia, Melbourne RUG
QuoteL4ance0 jmarsden I see answered that. Though that's pretty crazy! 300 dollars for the plastic bits? I mean I can see 100 + 50 for getting all the parts together / shipping... FWIW: I have all the plastic parts for a Mendel shipping to me from the UK (do not ask how much it cost.. too much is the answer!... but I'm not one who likes waiting), so I'll be starting the actual build soon after they arrive. Hopefully this will mean that between the Melbourne HackerSpace and myself we can churn out a decent number of parts (preferably not too expensive either) and kick-starby Cefiar - Australia, Melbourne RUG

1. Spam. I reported 4 (I think) posts that all appear to be spam. Could this have to do with changes that were done re: Image embedding in posts? 2. I've noticed the forum layout has changed so we're got the "Green" bar at the top again instead of the all-over white one I see on the main page at http://forums.reprap.org/ . Is this intentional, or once again related to changes that were done re:by Cefiar - Administration, Announcements, Policy
FWIW: The CCHS (Melbourne Hackspace) have almost got their CNC up and running. Also, someone has loaned them a Makerbot cupcake with extruder, plus they're in the process of building a Mendel (which I have donated some extra parts to). Hopefully this will help kick-start parts appearing here in Melbourne.by Cefiar - Australia, Melbourne RUG
Sounds like a plan! BTW: Might be worth measuring your metric drill bits as well. You might be able to use the shaft end as a rudimentary metric pin gauge to see just how close your imperial drill holes are to the metric sizes, rather than it being somewhere between the appropriate imperial sizes. The idea is that the shaft should be the correct size (unless they have a thicker shaft), and as itby Cefiar - For Sale

From what I can see, you'll still need stepper drivers. I count that as a plus, as a burnt-out stepper driver is easily replaced, whereas a burnt-out mainboard is not (or at least, more costly).by Cefiar - Next Wave Electronics Working Group
murrayd: They didn't have any 8mm at all when I went there (tried 4 stores), and the amount of metric fasteners they do have is woeful (and expensive) compared to the imperial. jbayless: Here in Australia, it's all over the place, so I'm not surprised it's like it is in Brazil. eg: In large hardware chains here, most of the straight/threaded rod available is imperial. Brian, In the meantime, if possible, it might be just worth it to detail the measurements you have made on each barrel at shipment. I personally wouldn't have a problem with a 0.5mm being 0.58mm (esp since the larger sizes make filling easier, and I know that is what I'm intending to do with my 0.5mm), but it would be damn good to know so that if it will make a difference, I can make an apprby Cefiar - For Sale
