Power down RAMPS and the mega board and disconnect the usb lead. Firstly disconnect everything from the RAMPS board (stepper drivers, stepper motors, thermistors and heater connections). Power RAMPS back up and connect the usb lead. Now upload the RAMPS test script (link). Now all the LED's should flash in order. If they don't then the RAMPS board itself has an issue. For ease of use I would buy a pre-hobbed bolt.. It depends on where you are planning on buying the filament from. Where I am (UK) its easier to get hold of 3mm filament and there is more selection compared to 1.75mm. As for the nozzle end its suggested that people start with 0.5mm then move to a smaller diameter once they are more confident. Personally I'd avoid any hotend which requires the usby JoeDaStudd - Reprappers
The smd components are a pain in the neck to solder without the correct tools, but with the right tools and some spare time its possible to assemble the board by hand. If you look at the 1.4 board and compare it to 1.3 you can really see all the extra components which would be next to impossible to add without using smd parts. I love the idea, however I would highly recommend you offer the option for a full case for the unit. Just the whole idea of a 200C+ nozzle/plastic and young children freaks me out. If you added a case with a window (or fully transparent) then it would be far safer to have in a school or household with children.by JoeDaStudd - General
I agree if your going to create a RepRap group, building actual RepRap would be the logical start. It might take slightly longer to get started (depending on your luck with suppliers), but the knowledge you learn will help a lot in the long run. I'm also a bit curious on why your buying the assembled kit as opposed to the unassembled kit at half the price?by JoeDaStudd - General
The easiest way to run the test file is to open the Arduino software, paste the content of the test file into the blank pane then hit upload.by JoeDaStudd - RAMPS Electronics
Lmao I did the exact same thing about 1 hour before you last night Fingers crossed it did the same thing as mine, it merely blew the stepper driver. After removing the driver, replacing it with a new one and correctly installing it correct it all works fine, well excluding the dead stepper driver. Just a little update. My kit arrived yesterday, so I started the smd soldering process. The chips are even smaller then I expected, but after the first few I did get the hang of it. It went 10 when I opened the kit (so so small), 7-8 for C2, 5 for LED1 back up to 7 for the other LED's (seemed to be a lot thinner then the green LED for some reason) then 3-4 for the rest. Q3. Its not the wattage that matters its the amps. Its rated at 10amps on the 12v which should be fine for a standard reprap (uses about 5amps). However on the heated bed you really want something which can give out in the region of 20ampsby JoeDaStudd - Reprappers
No you run the heated bed hotter for the first few layers then reduce down.by JoeDaStudd - General
I'm just starting off myself so I've got a lot of time to fall. One of biggest problems I had was finding the basic information and then the right information for my personal situation. This book would have helped me a ton if it was around when I got the bug. It came out literally the moment I started ordering parts. I'm almost dead on the border between Staffordshire and Derbyshire (Derbyshire postcode, technically still in Staffordshire), in the middle of nowhere. Closest (well recognizable) town is probably Buxton, the mineral water one, not the one in Norfolk. I've currently got the frame built, got the stepper motors and I'm waiting on my RAMPS 1.4 board from RepRapWorld.by JoeDaStudd - United Kingdom RepRap User Group
Ruben (from the Netherlands) offers build party services. ruben-ikmaak on #RepRap IRC I think its €850 or round that mark per machine and includes all the printer parts as well as print materials. Up-to 2 people per machine and it runs over a full weekend. Last time I spoke to him he said the service was offered world wide. I'm not sure if you have to pay travel costs or not.by JoeDaStudd - United Kingdom RepRap User Group
For the Z axis have you tried adjusting the regulator on the stepper driver? It could be the stepper driver isn't giving enough juice to the steppers. Hence why it can go down, but going up its struggling. Does it take a while for the heat to build in the hot end? It will have a slight warm up period, depending on the resistor and heating block. How can I test that my hot end is even getting hoby JoeDaStudd - General Mendel Topics
Its a start, but like kevinkline4124 said the standard wades extruder uses printed parts (main section, idler, small gear, large gear). These kevinkline4124 answered how the heating element in the kit works and yes the board has a connector which heats the element. With the kit its worth paying the little extra to get the smd parts pre-assembled (its only a tiny bit more). As for making it oby JoeDaStudd - General

Wow the timing of this is a bit uncanny. I was planning on building my prusa last weekend, but a few delays mean I should be able to start from tonight onwards. So tonight until Friday night was build time then the weekend was for calibration, tweaks and printing any upgrades. However I live about 45 minutes (closer to a hour if I'm driving ) from Sheffield, so this event is extremely temping.by JoeDaStudd - Reprappers

Thanks. I've just finished placing an order with ruben-ikmaak. Turns out he was selling the Zapp ones I was after in the first place . Hi all, I've ordered every part of my Prusa excluding the stepper motors. My original plan was to buy a set of 5 from thingfarm. mmm 1 for, 1 against. To make things worse I save about €30 buy DIY'ing it, but at the same time if it goes wrong its going to cost me €30 more to buy a pre-assembled board.by JoeDaStudd - RAMPS Electronics
Hi all, I'm at the final stages of ordering my parts and my last big decision is pre-assembled or diy RAMPS kit. I can do through hole soldering without any trouble and I've had a little experience with surface soldering although its been purely wire to pcb, never with any of those tiny resistors.
